`I am in no way pruriant or a prude and enjoy the same as the MAJORITY of forum attendees the opportunity for a "bad taste joke" ( I grew up with Biafra and Spas jokes, often found them not quite right, but humerous) but I am cheesed of at reading the self important opinions of the self elected Cabal of vociferous and often venal opinion generators on these fora.
The wealth of knowledge here is second to none but as always it is hijacked by personal, emotive and political agendas. So the last 2 comments only reinforce my observations of the last few years.
I am aware that by virtue of the number of postings I am still very small fry, but I have been attending these fora for a lot of years and watched a lot of very usefull contributors frightened off by force of numbers, and this to the curious amongst us is fairly close to "power is controll"
Perhaps my slightly tongue in cheek suggestion of a "lurkers forum" back in Dec 06 was not so stupid.
My suggestions are
1 Sensible questions, absolutely no smart arse answers
2 Sensible questions, absolutely no smart arse answers
3 etc
Alternatively a forum for irreverant postings (that would be good )
I know I am going to have the sh_t kicked out of me but I dont care, this last few posts p-ssed me off.
If you have an opinion and have been silent so far have a response you are not alone, dont let the bullies win, your opinion is just as valid as the fast typers, this took me at least an hour to compose and type, so have a go, be heard, remember T. Blair is in power by indiferance.
Just to really annoy the snipping, sniping , jobs worths that permeate these fora I am going to multiple post.
There is no personal content in this post, I do not know the contributors
and don't offer or imply any direct or indirect personal or impersornal
reflection implied or otherwise

IMHO that post should have been in the lounge, although there was a boaty flavour to it. However, there is not even a slightly boaty theme to this thread so should also have been in the Lounge.

Surely the "Moderators" should be keeping an eye on these forums - I've already PM'd then. I've also PM'd some of the annoying members who keep posting silly comments - you know the ones - look at how many thousands and thousands of posts they have - not all are the words of wisdom we are all looking for. If they want to make personal comments then they should use PMs.

Actually reading through lately there is an increasing propensity for peeps to come on these forums just to complain about other peeps who have their head up their bum.... the only thing is if someone gets stroppy talking about sailing that's bad enough but at least he has something to say about something other than I am pissed with the lot of yer.... innit? Surely the cure if he is that pissed off is to ....er.... go away? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Gosh Cagey, all of that just because I made a pun that the crew who may have crashed their ship while having sex should have taken precautions beforehand.

I've heard of sense of humour failure, and you don't have to appreciate it - you don't even have to groan, but don't you think that this is just an eensy bit of an over-reaction?

I would love to see these people in the real world walk into some pub and say the same sort of thing to the people sat there - what is it about the internet that brings out the whinging control freaks who have this idea that people will actually pay any attention to what they have to say?

most of them probably only read a few threads on one forum, and have no idea what goes on elsewhere, and make their decisions based on this very limited view.

Unbelievable.....

Do you have an idea at all of how the Internet works?..... without some of these people with "thousands and thousands of posts", then the forum would be slow and inactive, far less useful as less people would bother to read it regularly, and would therefore not attract the breadth of knowledge that currently exists here.... it would in fact reflect many of the other far less active fora available on the net..

If you really are so offended by the fact that people have gone beyond just asking for and offering "words of wisdom", and actually started to form friendships, then I suggest you go try one of those other forums instead, where there is nothing but "words of wisdom".... several of them are really quite active, getting as many as 10 posts a week.... you should find that your questions are answered to your satisfaction in a month or two....

Why then have you waited until now to say so ?

There are countless non boaty threads on Scuttlebutt that have nothing to do with boating ? The Lounge was designed to stop this. However, despite the best of intentions from IPC it has failed. I could be wrong, but in my own view Scuttlebutt is finished as a sailing forum because of a large group of people who think they own it and do not hesitate to become aggressive and very competitive to the point of making it uninhabitable. Plus the endless nonsensical postings that only this select group can seem to understand or appreciate. This only serves to drive people away.

Speaking for myself, I am happy with this situation because it largely leaves PBO to be a serious sailing and boating forum. Unfortunately, this is changing and the wreckers are wandering more and more into PBO as they they want an even bigger audience to satisfy there massive egos . This is why the Lounge failed to work.

To ask us to change our own personalities and change is probably totally unrealistic. I do however applaud the brave stance made by this poster who is already taking very nasty comments. As expected.

You insinuation is that there are a number of people 'damaging' this forum... from my perspective, this thread, and its proponents are the ones doing any potential damage...

There are always two sides to every argument.
