I did have twin seperate CAV 'bolt through' 296 diesel filters (shown below with glass bowl)but changed one last year to a CAV 'spin on' 296 filter (no glass bowl)

Having the water trap is always better but sealing the 'bolt through' filter is a pain in the Ar-- and takes three time the time to replace it.

ASAP no longer have any CAV 'spin on' filters and can only recommend a Racor R12T spin on filter GREAT but they are almost twice the price.

I have spent hours on line looking anyone know where I might find a CAV 'spin on' filter unit, capacity approx 45 LPH.

Your last post on Scuttlebum has a some posts with relevant links. I've just bumped it back to the top, I'm afraid I don't know how to put a link to it here

These spin on, cav type - are M16 x 1.5mm central spigot - and many options are available.

Look at Inlinefilters.co.uk for good range.
I swapped my cav out to a spin on head - and went with a genuine Fleetguard.

Options are the Baldwin 5587D - Fleeguard FS19599 - Mann Hummel WK842-2 - Delphi HDF-496A
all of these have a built in drain valve at the base.

The fleetguard above is a stratapore medium and 7 micron at 98%.

Genuine Delphi head units are around £40 - the cheaper ones can be a bit iffy on the threads, cheaply made and very dubious qulaity on the alloy. Get what you pay for I suppose.

I can get Mann 842 over the counter at a local Mann dealer at £4. The Fleetguards are about £6 from HGV online suppliers. These filters are used extensively in the diesel plant/truck range.

Cheers gents will give SSL and Inline filters a go, but leads on my earlier scuttlebutt post did not have any results

Thanks nemodreams for the usefull info as I am not an expert at filters.

Mike

Spoke with SSL Dieselparts this week. They recommended the SFA11 spin on replacement for my CAV. It uses a Delphi 496 and has a water drain valve at the bottom. I ordered it accordingly.

SSL don't list an SFA11. Are you thinking of the SFA10 I linked to in post #4?

I saw that too... They DID list it but maybe I bought the last one in stock on Wed and they took it down until they get more :)

Edit: Ssl still have it listed on their eBay site. It differs from the SFA 10 because of the no of ports I believe.

Dunno mate, ring or email them like I did. They responded within half a hour with all the answers I needed.

My engine is an 18hp 2GM20F.
