I have CAV filters on my boat and have no issue with sealing the elements.
I have 3 tanks with a primary with water Seperator on each tank filter and a pair of secondary AV filters on the engine
If any pf my primary filters block I just changes tanks and if my secondary filter blocks, I just change over filters with a 2-way valves.
The trick in changing the elements is to pinch up the center bolt not too tight then spin the element and /or water bowl fo ensure the correct seating of the elements.
I use a cut down milk bottle to catch any drips /fuel/elements to keep any mess down.
The only issue I have had was air leaking in via the copper washers on the banjo fittings I used which was rectified by replacing the copper washers with Dowty washers
I also fitted these to each tank to catch any crud stirred up in either of my tanks
