I got caught speeding (allegedly) , HM with blue flashing lights.
I got a rollicking for 20 minutes or so, attractive female assistant HM was writing loads of details at the time.

Thankfully I had just read a book on what to do when pulled over by traffic police and I was prepared for such an event, will that be the end of it or should I expect to receive a letter next ?

Has anyone been through this process ?

I am not sure how fast we were going, I was towing a dough nut at the time which gave the illusion of a faster speed (due to a short water line length they plane at slow speeds).
 
About 50 meters outside a ski zone but it is a no donut ski zone anyway (I now know but not at the time) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
 
about 50m.... that's a very tight turning circle of a boat at speed.... I guess it was the doughnut that attracted attention rather than the discrepancy of 50m.... there's always someone out there to spoil the fun... (before anyone says anything, yes I know water-skiing/ doughnuts etc are dangerous sports and these area's need to be policed to ensure everyone's safety... but 50m...its not a lot!)
 
Really, some people. Don't they know that, as you were towing something, you were constrained and hence the stand-on vessel? They should have kept out of your way, never mind stopping you with a load of rubbish about speeding and no-donut zones /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
About 15 years ago, I got pulled by Portsmouth QHM police for doing 25kts in the Eastern Solent 10kt, 1000yd off shore speed limit off the IOW. By then, I had slowed down at about 750 yds off the shore, perfectly safe, and didn't know there was a speed limit - nor did anyone else I spoke to. I acknowledged my speed and immediately wrote to QHM stating circumstances and suggested that they made more effort to publicise the limit. Also pointed out the Catch 22 - there was no indication of the limit and no way of knowing about it except by entering Portsmouth to pick up a leaflet (where it was buried in easy-to-miss small print), thereby entering the speed limit without knowing it!

They sent me a nice letter agreeing to make efforts to publicise it better and let me off.

ignorance is not a defence you know .... and didn't you check your charts? I'm sure it says something on there about doughnuts helming a speeding boat .... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
I know people who have fallen foul of the MOD police for speeding in Portsmouth Harbour area, Most land up with having to appear at the Portsmouth magistrates court.
Dont think they can flog or keel haul anymore
 
I think he should hung from a yard arm, they have plenty to choose from in Pompie!

I would have thought that with it being DAKA, he would have used his 'tact and diplomacy' that he uses on the forum to find a way out of the situation - mine you thinking about it that's probably got him deeper in the poo! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
 
What was the speed limit? Dougnut towing is commonly done at speeds between 12kt and 20kt (ie higher than most speed limit zones which are usually displacement speeds). Suggest put hands up, fair cop, grovel and smile.
 
About 15 yrs a friend of mine was stopped a few knots over the limit just in the zone to the west of Pompey entrance by the Harbour Police and was fined about £200. The summons to appear in their court was delivered to his home in Reading by 2 M.P,s in uniform. The sad [but funny] thing was that the little rib he was racing ran out of fuel and he only realised it was waterplod when he went back to help. Please keep us posted.
 
Everyone coming out of Portsmouth and heading west seem to be on the plane shortly after they have past the 10kt sign.

I didnt realise there limit went out 1/2 mile. Even the Pilots are away as soon as they have cleared the raggies.

It seems a bit daft to have the speed limit sign at the entrance to the harbour if you are already supposed to be doing no more than that before you can see it.

Can anyone advise what a speed limit symbol or warning looks like on the chart, I cant seem to find it

There isn't one. You have to read the almanac a 10 knot speed limit is operational 1000m from the shore within the designated area of the the Port of Portsmouth HERE.

The area covered by Portsmouth Harbour runs from a line from Hillhead across to Wooton Creek, then east along IOW but excluding Bembridge out to the Nab and then to a point just west of Langstone Harbour - it's a big area.
