Bit confused about the regulations/requirements for taking our pet cat to france and back.

Found info on the requirements on bringing a pet into the UK, but am bit confused about what we need to do for a short trip to France and back.

Any advice?

Thanks
Lisa

Taking mog over - no rules at all. Bringing mog back different story. Assuming mog has 'landed' then re-import to uk is under 'PETS' scheme. Need chip, passport (for which there is effectively a 7 month lead time), french offically approved vet to examine and treat for ticks 24 hours before trip back. Then, and this is the tricky bit, you have to travel on an "approved carrier", of which there is a list on the defra web site. All major ferrys and channel tunnel car shuttle (but not passenger train). Problem is that all but one need you to transport mog in your car, which you are unlikely to have about you, being in a boat!

I think you'll be OK for a short trip if the cat doesn't set foot on land, or you can convince the authorities it hasn't. In any case you're unlikely to be interrogated on your return.

As you live in Kent you need to be aware that in Ramsgate and Dover, NO animals are allowed to be on board yachts, regardless of any passport.

Are you quite sure that is true of Dover. I inquired earlier this year and they they said ok, and didn't seem to mind our mad Jack Russel in the marina office while we were berthed there.

<edit>Update: I just got off the phone with Dover marina. They confirmed that dogs are fine in the Dover marina so long as they haven't come from abroad(Sorry, forgot to ask about cats)

Always best to check the facts... </edit>

Ramsgate say "no animals". I had planned to give it a miss, but it's a good passage harbour after crossing the Thames estuary.

Before we left, a neighbour mentioned that they'd seen dogs on the pontoons in Ramsgate, so we paid them a visit last week. Stayed 24 hours, there were definately other animals there (openly) , as well as our cats, and we didn't see any harbour staff on the pontoons and had no problems. I don't know if any of the dog owners we saw tried to take the dogs off of the pontoons for a walk though, that may have been more obvious. Nice and easy with cats though as they don't need the exercise.
