Hi,

We currently have a problem with a Caterpillar 3196ta thats losing coolant but its not going into the engine bay. We think that it might be the heat exchanger. If there are any Cat experts could you give a estimate of one please?

Many Thanks

I do a few cats, where is it and what boat ?

You have three choices. 1) The coolant is going into the bilge via a leak. 2) The coolant is going into the sump via an oil cooler leak. 3) The coolant is going overboard via a jacket water cooler leak.
If its not in the bilge and the sump level is not rising and oil becoming creamy then I would plumb for the jacket water cooler.
It could also be cylinder head gasket but that would come with its own symptoms of poor running(if at all) due to the loss of compression. Go for the simplest causes first i.e. a cooler leak. Its more than likely a seal that has failed so I wouldn't ask CAT for a quote for a new cooler just yet.

Thank you for the replies, the boat is a Broom 50. it was originally in Deep Blue Boat share and the port engine (Faulty engine) looks as if it has had all pipes replaced and the Starboard engine has all original parts. That has made me think that the first owners had the same trouble.

The bilges are bone dry so its causing a headache. We had brooms look at it and they said it was leaking fluid from a loose joint in a pipe.Since then the bilge has stayed dry :/

Aquapower is your broom contact on here.

Got in Contact with Brooms again and they said it could be the Calorifier taking the coolant. Time to take the fridge out and Crawl around the Engine bay! This will be fun. Thanks for the replies and links

If you are going for the calorifier taking the coolant then turn off the supply and return hoses to the calorifier from the engine. Then you can see if you are loosing the coolant into the calorifier.
If you dont have taps in line then remove the coolant flow and return hoses from the calorifier and join them together thus isolating the calorifier.
Thats a simple test !!

If the coil had failed in the calorifier the water pressure in the domestic system would pressurise the engine, or you would have antifreeze in your tap water.

Is there any coolant in the bilge area under the hit tank?
