In parking at my new pontoon location in Fareham I notuiced that the boat next to me was a Prout too ( I think a 33) called Catatonic...... Small world!!
Agree with all that and the Privilege is a very nice boat too. Only thing no one has said is that the crew fatigue on a cat is so much less making it much more feasable to plan longer legs with less crew....
Top of fareham creek is a nice sheltered spot, but a very long way from the harbour entrance and a tad tidal! When were you thinking about poping over to Cherbourg?
When to reef?
I have a small Prout (Quest 31) and tend to reef for comfort. Down wind in a big swell NE of Cape Wrath I was woken up by the noise (delivery trip singlehanded). Went into cockpit and found we were doing 10 kn on the face of a swell so wound in a bit of Genoa. Still averaged over six knots ground speed to make the tide into Hoy Sound though.
Going to windward I tend to keep below the 6 to 7 kn mark in open water, again for comfort. Bigger boats will no doubt have higher speeds before the need for comfort cuts in.
A big advantage of the cat is that I can take her out for an hour or so. No need to stow anything, milk bottle open on the drainer, no problem lets go sailing. Last winter got back into the marina after a couple of hours beat and a monohul owner came on board. Was very rude about the lack of tidy stowage below, but I was part way through a refit and had decided it was too fine an afternoon not to go sailing! Tools and cables still where I left them.
On the same theme the Prout rig sails well with just the headsail, I have even sailed in and out of my marina berth with it. In sheltered water I only missed stays when tacking once, with a monohull sailor as crew who did not understand that a cat needs nursing through a tack.
Oh yes I have owned monos. my previous boat was a McGruer 8 meter C/R. (42ft on deck, 10 ft beam, 6 ft draught and long overhangs). Sailed very well but it got tiring leaning over whenever the wind was forward of the beam and rolling whenever it was behind the beam (other than in sheltered waters).
