CAT impeller price - Speechless

Quote for a Cruise Kit for CAT C18 1150 hp engines.

PN 3421615 Pump Impeller £489.71 EXCLUDING!!!! VAT.

For an impeller!

Where else can you buys these things!

Give asap a call, they wil supply the same Sherwood impeller for a lot less.

Well that was a saving! Model 22000 from ASAP is £258.04 + VAT. Still expensive but I am £500 better off for the pair!

They think that is the one for the engine but have asked me just to check the pump model before ordering.

Volvo don't make a 1150hp inboard, but they do make a tiddly 13-litre 900hp engine, which is €150,000 each side (list price).

Let's assume that CAT don't give away engines, compared to Volvo.
So, maybe somewhere between €170k and €190k for each engine?

.

That feels strange j. I just pulled out my invoice from my service in March 2014: impellers for my Cat C32s, from an official Cat agent in daylightrobbery-ville South of France, and supplied with Cat branded boxes, were euros255.98 ea plus VAT. They are p/n 3228595 so they're different from yours, but they're quite big beasts as you'd expect. £500 does therefore feel pretty punchy

Apols ref egg sucking, but if you've bought them as spares, remember to buy the tool to extract them

Can we have some pictures of your fab new boat please? :D

Seems reasonable, do you know what goes into making and designing an impeller? Is the ASAP a cheap copy? Good Luck.. LOL

Joking aside, the CAT impellers are originally usually either Johnson or Jabsco, try going direct, rather than through ASAP...

ASAP supply genuine Sterling impellers for the pumps that Cat fit to their engines. ASAP are about 50% of the Cat prices. I will try to buy in the USA next time, about 50% of the ASAP price. While they are expensive, then they are very durable.

Unfortunately more and more manufacturers are adopting the ink jet printer pricing model, so think of spares as finance payments on your engines. My "favourite" so far is 25 euro for an o-ring.

If it was me.

I would a check that £489 was not for a pair.

If for one , I would double check it with another Cat dealer.

Assuming the £489 is correct I would only use only genuine 100% Cat spares, lubes, coolants etc for the warranty period plus 2 years which is about the limit of goodwill at a push.

Manufacturers will use any use of non OEM parts to wriggle out of a warranty or goodwill claim.

After that I would fit any non OEM part that I "Trust" and I don't trust a lot of non OEM parts.

As flower power said , what would a replacement C32 cost? Say £80k ? Plus fitting?

I will try to buy in the USA next time
Good idea.
The last time I've been in FL, I had to fight a bit with swmbo, but eventually she allowed me enough space in one of our bag for a whole P1710 Sherwood pump (OEM for Cat 3116, and possibly also for your 3126?), which I bought to keep onboard as a spare.
$540, i.e. MUCH less than what the OP was asked for the impeller alone, go figure....!
And on top of that, I bought a couple of spare impellers at $50 or so each.
Sure, much smaller engine, hence pump, but anyway.....

It does not matter if the bit is identical and same original manufacturer as the OEM one buy from another source and you break the chain of responsibility with the engine manufacturer so allowing them wriggle room from warranty or goodwill cover.

Ok so how much to buy a C32 Cat ??

Unfortunately my Cats are out of warranty :)

LOL, hard to expect any warranty or goodwill cover on an engine which is out of production since more than one decade, you know.... :D

Re. the C32 price, as with anything boating-related, there's only one accurate answer: it depends.
Buy enough of them, and you can pay less than 50k USD a pop.
But if you must ask, I'm afraid you're more likely to pay 4+ times such price. :)
