Re: Hint

I think we are agreed that an artefact can potentially be a classic whatever material it is made from. I was simply saying that something old made of wood has an (unfair?) advantage in most people's eyes because of the long tradition of using wood.
An artefact made in a newer material has a harder struggle to be recognised as a classic, and generally has to demonstrate some radical advance, in design, technique, use, etc. It sometimes takes time for these features to become recognised. Indeed most new features are generally rejected when they first come in, so a small but growing band of enthusiasts for something new inevitably have a harder time persuading traditionalists that these too can be classics.

I don't see anything controversial in that presentation - that surely is just how it is, given human history and nature.

I was obviously reading something into previous posters' words that they had not intended. In English useage, saying something is good "in its way" or "of its kind" is usually called damning with faint praise. I was struck that at least two posters used the expression.
Sorry if I have misinterpreted their words.

Meanwhile, back to classics.
The jig argument is a good one. It applies in other fields too. Lots of great "classic" paintings were churned out by the artist's assistants after he had done the initial work. Holbein I think had a series of made up canvasses with different shaped heads ready-painted, and then just filled in the details for a particular sitter.

Re: Hint

I agree the subjective assumption that a wood build 'must be a classic' is common, and is a mistake. Some are just DOTs - dreadful old tubs! As far as I am concerned if a boat looks good then thats OK with me, whatever it is built of.

The test of time is whether they survive as a desired and desireable design: I propose that any boat still generally sought after and admired say 20 years after it went out of production is probably on the way to being a classic - "of its kind!"

Hey! I've got an idea. Why don't we just get all those gelcoat pourers on minimum wage to just build wooden boats from those 'jigs'? Can't be too difficult can it? That way we would get new wooden boats for the price of plastic ones!!

Selection of timber, fastenings, tools, offering up, dummying out, steaming, bending, hand skills? Nah, the magic 'jig' will sort all that out.

You need to do all that no matter what you are making , jigs are part of the tool kit , nothing special just a tool that is used by anyone making more than a few parts .

Re: Hint

Surely the word 'classic' refers to the design rather than the material? I'd call a brand new Hans Christian 48 a classic, or maybe one of the Vancouvers and perhaps the Francis 26 along with the usual Contessas and Nicholsons .. ever seen a Nich 43? I've also seen some wooden boats that only a mother/designer could love. I've got a gorgeous wooden one (classic) and a plastic one ... ok, quite pretty but not a classic! ... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

1..Religion.

2..politics

3..Classic boats.

No-one will ever agree about any of them, still, we haven't got to handbags at dawn yet! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Hint

A Classic Boat is.........ANY boat that someone has purchased KNOWING that a cheaper and / or "better" alternative is available........

Re: Hint

"On the other hand I think there are some boats built from stuff like steel and aluminium that could qualify for classic status" Couldn't agree more.

Built 1958 to a Van de Stadt design of 4mm rolled steel plate,
Mike.

I detect a distinct anti plastic feeling here

Is there really? When I had a plastic boat I never got an anti- feeling here. You just need to try and match the question to the forum and there is a huge body of information specifically about plastic to be found in the PBO forum if you can figure out how to find it. If you have a question about the more "traditional" aspects of boats and sailing, then I would ask it here whatever material my boat is made from.

If you just want to show off a good looking boat then I reckon most of us are happy to see them here. But it has to be a "classic" of course /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
