There is a clunking noise coming from my recently re-built Cat 3116 diesel. I would have posted a video if possible. As the RPM's ramp up the sound gets less. Motor runs fine and has comparable performance as other motor. The mechanic who did the rebuild and install has not been able to solve the issue. I am hoping I can point him in the right direction.
Thanks

Does it start and idle smooth?, could be something simple like incorrect adjusted valve lash, injector timing or bad injector or bad injector seat, setting the injector timing is fiddly even with the CAT tools

Starts great, runs smooth. Equal power to other motor. Idles fine. I have posted a couple of videos.

Sounds mechanical so not a diesel knock, take the valve cover off and run it and see if you can pinpoint the source of the noise, does sound a bit like valve adjustment or valve train related

You said “ clunking “ that’s a tapping noise .
Whats it had done ? Your engineer or yourself with a stethoscope should be able to pin point the spot / small area .
Use a piece of 10 cm dia pipe to your ear and move it about , start with the valve gear on top of each cylinder , then inlet and exhaust side if one s making the racket .
Then the block up and down each cylinder , and everywhere else , water pump alternator etc etc .
You will find where quickly.
