I am in the process of trying to get a friends HR352 Cat 2 coded for teaching. I have rung the RYA re the inspection and requirements etc who said they would send an information pack out to me. I would like this done before Christmas and therefore rather than wait for the post was wondering if anyone here had experience of this and could offer me some advice?
One of the questions I have is does the boat have to be lifted out of the water for an inspection? If so can anyone point me in the direction of somewhere cheap to do this? The boat is kept at Moodys at Swanwick.
Thanks.

Not sure, but almost certainly will require a haul out for the survey. Recommend Gosport Boatyard for this. Very reasonable compared to others when we had to have a survey.

The short answer is yes the boat will have to be lifted out for inspection.

When I coded my last boat, I used the services of a local surveyor. Get hold of a copy of the 'Blue Book' (I think that the full title is 'The Code of Practice for Small Commercial Craft'). Its a bit turgid, but if you read it through and work out what applies to your boat, you should be well on your way to sorting things out. My surveyor was very 'on side' and came twice - all as part of one fixed fee for a purchase condition survey with a code of practice survey and then the final inspection survey. He came up with a list of details to put right, and then submitted the forms - even produced the stability figures from stock and with the fees paid, the MECAL certificate duly arrived. To qualify as a school boat, you need this ticket and then discuss with the RYA the way ahead.

I think the MCA is responsible for assessing yachts for commercial activities, you should be able to find the detailed requirements from them online.

When I looked into coding a yacht, Fairview of Hamble provided me with a spreadsheet of costs and I do not recall seeing a lift out fee itemized. Maybe there was an exemption for a new production yacht.
