cast iron keel box

greetings fellow (strungout shoredound) sailors.
we have bought jeanneau fantasia 27 for christmas(much more sensible than socks and pants).
the castiron keelbox has a small amount of rust on it,what is the best approach for:

A.removing it
B.overcoating once removed.

we sit by our PC eagerly awaiting your wealth of knowledge to come to our rescue.
