Ok - So I took a boat out for a Sea trial at the weekend and a sudden thought made me wonder.
Why is it that when you make a sharp turn on land i.e. in a car the car "rolls" AWAY from the direction that you are turning.
In the boat as I turned sharply it heeled INTO the turn.

So why is that ?????

Cos you'de have fallen out if it hadn't. Daft bugger. It's like a motor bike. Or push bike. It's got to fall one way or tother. But not sell well tother way. So hence it falls inward and holds every one in seat. Tother way and Oh Hell!! You've got to give them some credit for getting it right!!

This is a very good question and I dont know the physics of the answer only to say that it is a characteristic of planing V hulled boats that they lean inwards when turning. Other types of boat, particularly displacement boats, do lean outwards when they turn
Its not the same as a motorbike where the inward lean is intitiated by the rider counter steering (steering in the opposite direction to the bend - yeah, I know it sounds silly but anyone who rides a bike knows this) and possibly some shift of the riders weight. The bike wont go round the corner unless it leans, except at very slow speed

Just out of curiousity, what were you sea trialling? I thought you'd just bought a Fairline Targa, are you changing it already?

Come on guys....If you throw the stern out the bow turns in.

Try driving your car in reverse and turn the wheel over, see which way the forces act..........initially. "Don't try this too fast". The main difference in the two comes down to friction.

have fun
Dave.

Forward or backward, the car still wants to tip over towards the outside of the turn whereas a planing boat tips over towards the inside of the turn. No satisfactory explanation yet.

how about water on outside has to move further/faster and provides more lift as per aerofoil wing on aircraft?

Service with a snarl.

Displacement boats and v hulls at v slow speeds and slow turns ALWAYs heel outwards.

At speed a v hull will tip onto the inside planing surface as the thrust is being directed beneath the point of lateral resistance (same whether shaft or stern drive).

What he means is without a keel, the rudders push the bottom of the boat side ways. So the top end, not being able to keep up, tips on its V. Like a seesaw. Well I think thats what he mean anyway it's what I mean!!
