When I bought my boat, it was ten years old. I'm sure it had the original shag pile pink carpet. Since then, it has had a new carpet every year, theres always a disaster. There was the axminster, or was it wilton, that was always full of fluff. This became a mixture of fluff and tomato soup.

Then there were the old dogs that got sick a few times. The leak from the bathroom, that took ages to find, that sent the carpet all manky.

This year the new carpet got attacked by Deborahs ggammy leg, what sprayed blood all over it in dollops, ok theres a couple of fag burns, but you can hardly see them.


The dining room carpet has never even been stood on yet, but the kitchens all mildue and blood. The saloon carpet has been up and down like a brides nighty and is sort of fraying round the edges. Not forgetting the blood and fag burns, tthere maybe a bit of sea gull [--word removed--] as well, I have not examined closely.

Debs has a tactic of buying rugs, and placing them in strategic places. We're getting a bit crowded by rugs.

How do other folk get on. .

Carpet swatches from the local Carpets "R" Us. Look for the ones that are edged all round - mix and match then bin the odd one that gets covered in blood or beer or wine (don't do mildew below decks)

Buy the cheapest and change at will, usually from Carpet Right. Kids with muddy feet are the least of our carpet's problems, Dad is responsible for engine service cock-ups leaving black smears all through the saloon!)

Same Hessian backed office grade carpet for 10 years edged and fits perfect in main and fore cabin. Was laid by previous owner and I suspect he had it for some years.
It has no hold downs etc. - it is a good fit and is just lain there in place. Gets odd stain or wet - take out - brush it off and let dry.
It's only now starting to shed odd fibres when brushed - so a replacement will be next year probably. What will it be ? Office grade hessian backed again.

Previous boats I used bathroom carpet - but found it was always damp under where the rubber back didn't breathe. The Hessian backed does though and unlike foam backed doesn't leave anything stuck to sole.

Turtle Mats; about half a dozen of them.

When dirty just bung it in the washing machine. And excellent at taking the crap off shoes as folk walk around the boat. It's been a revelation; we've binned all our traditional carpet.

Boat had deep shag pile when bought. I thought - how daft in a boat. BUT, it was sooo good when you stepped out of bed with bare feet in the morning. And it lasted for years despite kids & grandkids & loads o' mud & salt water.

Replaced it with an oddment of rubber backed bathroom carpet a few years back, not so soft, but a bit more practical.

Always put dust sheets down when working on the engines,it saves a lot of work afterwards. At least its something to wipe your feet on when you come up from the engineroom.
