Hi, just bought our first boat and one of the jobs we need to tackle quickly is cleaning the carpet. Generally a bit grubby with a few rust stains from the previous owners fishing gear !
Any advice on best cleaning solution would be welcome.

Cheers masonni

Carpet cleaning machine from the hire shop, with whatever chemical they sell. Mix it at least twice strength, and add in anything else you fancy. My favourite concoction used industrial carpet shampoo, traffic film remover (Haydn's Patent Boat Removing Elixir), Fairy Power Spray and whatever else was in the lazarette that we'd bought in the swindlers and decided didn't work very well.

All of that gets chucked in a bucket with very hot water, and vigorously scrubbed in by hand with a very stiff brush. Use shed loads, because the cleaning machine will suck it all out. If you've got rust in the carpet, I'd add some rust streak renmover from the swindlers, too. Oh, and wear rubber gloves, because this mixture will dissolve skin. It might be worth exprimenting with dishwasher tablets, too, as they're pretty powerful.

Is that what you've been cleaning your engine mounts with, Graham?

If the carpets are removable, best results would be to take them up and find a local carpet cleaner and have them professionally cleaned.
If you decide to clean them yourself using DIY machine, use the correct amount recommended, as using more would more likely to re soil the carpets quicker.

ps I would'nt recommend using a rust removing agent.

my mother never used her vax anymore so i took it & wash my boat out with a hose pipe and then get on my hands and knees for 5 mins and vaccuum to slightly damp.normally fully dry within a day.dont use any products but vanish as stated do a few down your local supermarket for stubborn stains.you may get a second hand one off ebay cheap but i'm very happy just rinsing to get rid of all salty water, sand, mud etc and vaccuuming every outing.
