Carpet as headliner?

I am glad someone asked this question as it was one on my list...

Can any suggest a good, easy to apply and cheap adhesive to use?

Screwfix do a good spray contact adhesive, reasonably priced too.

I would avoid vinyl if you can - it may be easy to wipe down when moist but that's because you need to! With carpet or a soft surface, the condensation doesn't "strike" so doesn't form in the first place - as others have said, it's nice and warm to the touch. Therefore it stays dry, no condensation forms on it and no need to wipe down.

Unless you get a leak or other source of water ingress of course.

And yes, even if the vinyl is foam backed it's still more likely to feel colder / get condensation that carpet.

Just my opinion of course - all down to your preference.

I've an Elizabethan 31 and there is no headliner in the fo'c'sle, I was thinking of using carpet, has anybody tried this and or have any useful comments?
Currently it is painted GRP but the paint is all flaking off as the grp flexes when I step on the foredeck. I think the insulation would be beneficial whilst still being able to be removed easily. (I was planning on fitting it with velcro).

Firstly, a felt or hessian backed carpet is best, secondly, use a proper adhesive with low emissions, see here: http://www.f-ball.co.uk/product_detail.asp?product=F820LE&catID=lowemission

I've done several boats this way, better than panelling and warmer than alternatives too, although to be honest I used Evostik 538 and bedded straight onto wet adhesive spread with a brush but it does give off loads of fumes and good ventilation is a must. Styccobond is much more user friendly!
