Carnage ooop north

It's ooop north, which is foreign aid to us Londoners. And I agree with you, Byron.

It wasn't caused by warming(as the BBC would have us believe), but not enough money spent where it should have been. And if the weather turns southwards, the Thames will be in for another disaster.

A couple of pics from the Naburn Marina (York) facebook page

General flooding view

The pontoon retaining pole she is leaning in would be at least 12ft above her head on normal Summer levels !!

99.99% of the worlds scientific community suggest it is......
Actionmat suggests it isnt......do tell us more ..the world awaits the peer reviewed data behind this stunning revelation.

Do try to keep it simple for those us of yet to achieve a detailed knowledge of climate change. :):):)

Same way uk had these mild temperatures 70years ago (apparently current temps highest in 70years)....nature.

Perhaps you can say where you get the 99.99 figure from?

Anywhere you care to look :)

the number of people in the scientific world who dispute that climate change is not affected by human activity is tiny compared to those prepared to accept the possibility.
Quite why this tiny minority appear to get so much weight attached to their arguments may be down to the lobbying power of those with a vested financial interest on continuing our reliance on carbon based energy ?
A very similar argument came to the fore a year or two ago.
Virtually the entire medical world.99.99% of doctors suggested that the triple vaccine was safe to give to children and would be of benefit to the entire community.
Some nutter in a certain newspaper (no names but most definately among the climate deniers) managed to create quite a bit of hysteria by claiming it was dangerous,
Chaos followed, simply because some ill informed old tosh was peddled as having equal weight against the entire medical world.

Did my boating on the Yorkshire Ouse in the 70's.
It's always flooded badly. There is a riverside pub in York that floods regularly.I can remember boats moored on the river in the countryside on scaffold pole risers, owners scratching their heads as they looked at their boats two flooded fields away.
It's probably why Naburn have installed large enough to cope pontoon poles!
But in the 70's there was not 24/7 news.

I don't know where you get your figures from. So do 99.99% of the scientific community agree that the government's cuts and lack of investment in flood defences have caused this, or was it me and my driveway full of gas guzzlers?:D

It's caused by upland (moorland) deforestation and drainage.

Maybe the powers that be need to stop trying to keep rivers like the Thames and the Ouse open for recreational boating and instead reconfigure them for more efficient drainage. After all, the interests of a relatively small number of boat owners really shouldn't come above those of tens of thousands of home owners, should they?

Are you leg pulling or just trolling? Because a forum for Thames boaters seems a strange place to make that statement.

I sail on a fresh water river quite frequently. I'm pointing out that "flood prevention should take priority over aid" might lead to other questions like "should flood prevention take priority over boating". How would you convince people that an increased risk to their homes is worth it in order to keep rivers open to leisure navigation? It's an argument which may well have to be made.

York was due to turning off the flood defence pumps and opening the barrier allowing the water to back feed, why ? the pumps flooded !!!!!

Brian

Sure, part of the flood defences failed but the basic problem wasn't too much rain alone, it ran off too quickly.

Up here in SW Scotland we have had more-or-less continuous rain since the beginning of October. The ground is now so wet that it simply cannot absorb any more - the slightest drizzled causes flooding on roads which stays around for days after the rain stops.

Frank's doing his thing as I type ... I'll be getting up early to check a river and two burns ...
