I was hoping I could get a little help regarding beginning a career in the yacht industry. I'll be honest and say that I don't have a great deal of knowledge and feel a little embarrassed about asking this question, but here it is.

I would like to begin, by working as a Deckhand on Superyachts (over 24m), so know that I have to get my STCW 95, powerboat etc but would like to aim for a my Yachtmasters in time, so I can progress in the Industry. My only problem is, whether to do my training on a sail or motor yacht? Is it just a case of personal preference?

I would also like to know if there's much difference between the two and does one have more career opportunities.

Thanks
Paddy

I have had some simliar thoughts, and done a little research. This is by no means the gospel, but thought I would pass on the information I had learnt so far.

From speaking to people in the industry, a Yachtmasters under sail is more highly thought of due to the candidates requiring a slightly more detailed understanding of weather/tides etc for sailing. I have been recommended to do the yachmaster sail, and then the conversion to motorboat giving you the best of both worlds.

Speak to some of the sailing schools with recruitment attached to them e.g. Flyng Fish and UKSA as they have alot of info.

Hope that helps a little

Contact Blue Water in Antibbe.

They specifically train superyacht guys, so know exactly what is required.

Cheers for the replies

I have been looking at different schools that offer the fast track route and have been quite impressed with the following;

UKSA
Gibraltar Sailing
AllAbroad
Cornish Cruising

I also liked the look of Stormforce too, but was a little on the expensive side. My head is telling me to go with UKSA even though it's slightly shorter.

Good choice??
