After last weekends big adventure, Portishead to St. Pierre Pill return on BH Monday hopefully going to do Portishead- Cardiff return on Saturday as the tides and weather look good. That gives us about 3-4 hours in Cardiff and the girls want to see the shops. Where should we tie up and what is unmissable as far as shopping goes. Me and Andy will just need a beer and a sandwich.

Tie up at Mermaid Quay. If the girls want to go into the centre there is a bus every 10 mins and the bus stop is on the road just behind Tesco.

Hello Doug. good to see you again the other day. As Andy says Mermaid quay is the best place turn right out of the locks and head for the brick clock tower..

Place not to eat is Harry Ramsdens. We used to go there as the kids liked it but now its the worst fish and chips going.

Loads of places to eat and drink all around the Quay .

Would have come across and joined you but will be at Llangors camping with Sean at a kids sailing reggatta.

Had wind right on the nose all the way back last night not the pleasantest of sails in a gusty wind and drizzle /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif,it will be better when summer arrives.

Went up in record time for us on Monday with a stiff breeze behind us all the way.

Lisette is at my sisters hen do so i will be 'playing' for the weekend (i will have little Ben) but come on over to Bonny Mary or Gallipette for a beer.

Best place to see shops from is a boat, in my opinion. Not fussed on HR fish and chips either. I had a lovely cod but the ships were a mush the other night. Even Tigger wouldn't eat them, and he's a scrounging lurcher rescue dog from Barry.

I can Highly recomend the "Lightship" in Roath basin for grub, and for booze there`s a pub about 20 yards away called "The Waterguard" they do some lovely German lagers, come to think about it they do food as well. its near the Norwegian Church.

Thanks guys for all your recommendations and sorry we didn't meet up. Had a great day apart from lack of wind ( see Holms race post). Left Portishead on 8.30am lock, which meant the girls were not with us, they stayed in bed and drove over. But we had a great morning. wind was abit flukey and we went round the south side of the lighthouse following someone else. Eventually locked in at 1.15pm and got across to Mermaid Quays where we had some lunch at the Great Hamburger something. Jan recommends the veggie options.

Headed back with no wind but lots of tide. At one point were making 9.5kts og. Got back to Portishead in less than 3 hours but joined a queue of 10+ boats. Respect to Damo who sorted us out and got us in there asap ( but we were back of queue).

Will definitely come over to Cardiff/Penarth again, a great day out and would be good to meet up with other channel folk.
