We recently visited Cardiff for the first time last weekend.

Had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fantastic bay and great restaurants with everyone extremely friendly. I though it was great /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

However, I was absolutely amazed when locking in and out.

Everyone simply barges past each other trying to get into a lock. Never mind boats in an orderly queue waiting for the boat in front to enter the lock.

They just go straight round you, sailing mobo's makes no difference.

It this what happens all the time?

This does not happen in Portishead or Bristol. No one would dream of pushing in, what's the point.

It did make me laugh though. One saily boat pushed past the lot and there was no enough room. So he had to push back and try and get in the next one. Serves him right.

In a funny sort of way queues, even though I am English, suck so I'd be inclined to applaud non-queueing. 'Orderly queuing', as a concept, actually hurts.

Have to agree with you "Who" distinct lack of manners and courtesy.
Being Welsh, it shames me to say, it doesn't happen like that in Portishead or Bristol.

I’ve used the locks a few times over the past year and generally people are courteous and enter the locks in an orderly fashion. There will of course always be exceptions. Sounds like you experienced those exceptions in and out.

I was out Sunday and didn’t have a problem, maybe down to luck of the timing though I haven't had a major problem all year.

There are still courteous types in existence down here, hopefully you’ll have a better experience on your next visit. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hi glad you enjoyed Cardiff Bay,there used to be a booking procedure in the early days if i remember but that seems to have gone by the wayside,i know how frustrating it can be especialy in a small slow sail boat to book a lock and on the way to be overtaken by faster boats to fill the lock and then be forced to wait for the next one, also comercial operations seem to have priority i dont know how true this is though.but on the whole people still seem to be good mannered.

They used to call you in by boat name 5 years or so ago, but now it is a free for all. Someone will have an accident one of these days.

It would work well all the time at Portishead if skippers obeyed the lights /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Hands up who knows what green/white/green means! (Hint to resident boats - it's on the handbook page entitled "Locking Procedure" /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

GWG is enter under instruction or words to that effect?

Anyway I had boats with a bit of a free for all Sunday. I find the worst ones are the small fishing boats.

One problem though is if you come out of Penarth just before locking you are not sure who was queuing in the bay and who has just arrived at the same time as you.

Anyway when the chips are down peeps are helpful as one very helpful yacht towed us back to the marina when the engine would not start.
