I have a 12ft clinker built dinghy, not very big and not very wide. I thought it would be a simple thing to be able to get afloat around cardiff bay. Ohhhh how wrong I was.

The marina dont want to know (kind of expected really) and the boat clubs want you to attend every weekend and every event going (one actually told me they would revoke my "space" if it wasnt used enough). I just want to be able to sail when I want to and not feel compelled or tied to a timescale.

I live about 3/4 hour away so I could trailer back and fore but it would be far more convienant if I could leave it there. Is this really to much to ask?????

Whats the general concensus

It cuts both ways. I would love a mooring in Penzance but there is a fifteen year waiting list to get on the waiting list, yet several boats out in the harbour are never used and are slowly rotting away. It only seems fair to me to have a use it or lose it policy where supply out strips demand.

i think you are probably refering to CBYC which has a use it or lose it system. The reason is simple. The club is very pressed for space,we now have a flexible use of space where more of the club is used for boat storage in winter and more for car parking in summer.

With land prices at Hollywood levels around the bay theres no simple remedy.

Its unfortunate for people that only want to sail occasionally but seems sensibl;e to allocate the limited dinghy park spaces to those that sail the most.

With a good trailer in your position I would be inclined to keep the boat at home and not join a club.

Depends how wedded you are to the idea of sailing Cardiff bay. You could easily get storage for your dinghy at Newport, and most probably at Chepstow.

CBYC has a parking problems - way more boats on pontoons than cars can use the car park, so they need to use what space they have for dinghies carefully. CYC isnt quite as badly off for land space.

Hi I will not be much help with regards to actually sailing the boat. But if you wanted to find a secure place to store your boat/trailer then I have had my boat stored at Cardiff Self Storage for a few years without a problem. They have 24/7 access, CCTV and guard dogs patrolling site. The staff are really helpful and prices are reasonable compared to other storage facilities. If you need them their number is 02920 361361.
