Carburettor cleaning- what's best?

All very interesting. I think I'll buy a cheap u/sonic cleaner off ebay and use it on the carb body, and then have a play with the float levels if that doesn't work. Bottom line is I'm probably in for a new carb anyway so if I mess it up completely I'm no worse off. I just hate to be beaten by such a simple little engine........

Thanks to everyone who contributed, all very useful. Cheers!

Make sure if you buy an ultrasonic cleaner that your carb will fit into. The cheap ones on ebay are for cleaning jewellery and your carb will not fit in it.

No - it's a solvent you use to clean the thing with. Supposed to be good for the varnish-y deposits which can gum up narrow passageways. I've not used, it, though, so it may just be a mixture of white spirit and snake oil. Could be worth a go, though.

You are right, years ago when I worked in a Lab we used to formulate similar stuff and it was basically just white spirit

SWMBO has a small jewellery cleaner I use for my outboard carb. The secret is to submerge the carb in liquid in a tall container, I use hot water and washing up liquid. Then stand that container in the water in the bath. The vibrations are transferred between the liquids and the carb is cleaned a treat. Not as good as a large deep bath but still effective.

What a useful tip. Haven't sourced one yet but that certainly widens (and cheapens) the choice. Cheers.
