Carb rebuild - Choke and float question

Have rebuilt carb today, quick couple of questions.

1 The choke was not in the same place as it states in the manual! Carb was rebuilt last year so don't know what they did!
Anyway it was about 3/4 away from lining up with the scribe marks, I've done that, im assuming the flap should be under tension.
How are people's chokes set for the Great British weather ( Cornwall) bang on or more/less choke?

2 I've always made sure that floats in carbs are level with the gasket without doing to much technical measuring, should I go for the technical measuring or will it be fine with the float being precisely level by eye?

It's been a good few years since I had one but I can remember it was an absolute dog to cold start. I overhauled the carbs and set everything exactly as the book of words said. Ran like a dream but still a dog to start cold. Then I played with the auto choke which on mine was a temperature sensitive spring affair, and yes for my area the scribe marks were considerably off. So if the engine isn't being a dog at cold start leave well enough alone or use the Book of Words to set it manually. You'll probably end up where you are now.

In the good old days with cars with auto choke converting to manual was the most sensible fix.

A Granada, good grief no! One of those would be pretty well everything I don't want in a car.

Hi

There is probably a good reason for the choke being not in the usual position. More often than not, these Vp and merc GM carb engines end up with the auto choke sticking on or slightly on, when it shouldnt be. Most will likely be wound all the way off and locked that way by now. Just means that you need to pump the throttle a few tomes before a cold start. Catch it when it starts and hold at a high idle until she warms a little.
