Car radio with long wave?

Sorry this must be a very boring post to the electronically minded, but for a couple of years I have thought that what I want on the boat is a car radio which I can screw into the panel at the back of the chart table and leave tuned to R4, LW.

So far as I can tell, there ain't no such animal - or is there?

My phillips in the car has both LW and SW believe it or not, don't know if all philips do though.

The £99 JVC radio/CD has LW which my g/f has in her motor.

I currently have a warfdale radio/cd in the boat with no LW, but it has an aux in which could connect to a world band radio, which might be handy, currently we use it for an MP3 player, also very handy indeed.

Many people install car radios into boats, lots of them come with LW too.

Some useful hints -

* Don't expect a car radio to last as long in your boat as it would in a car (salty air)
* Use damproof speakers - not cheap car speakers, as these have paper cones which don't like the humidty too much

Most car radio's have both FM (i.e VHF) and AM (the old medium and longwave) just tune AM to 200khz and that I believe should give you what you require.
p.s. did you hear about the 16valve Skoda????they were all in the radio. Good listening

Try and get a old radio as most (all?)new need a constant 12v supply to retain the memory presets.No good if you turn the batts off.

At LIBS, have a look on the SMG stand where they will have the super new, neat SR100 radio. Waterproof. Well built. Does AM-FM-LW-SW and monitors all 55 international marine vhf channels. I have run on on the test bench and it was very impressive. Will also take 2 x speakers and you could use it on your normal vhf aerial via a splitter plug. Price abt £115 even before you haggle, or the mainstream chandlers start to discount it.

There is a pic of it in Feb issue of PBO due out - I believe- a few days before the show.

Thanks very much for that; sounds like the perfect answer.

I have been lugging my very nice Sony shortwave portable to and from the boat and have got fed up with doing so. I've got space in the instrument panel at the back of the chart table, so thought of a car set, but this seems much better.

Now I've got something to do at LIBS, besides whinge at the Blakes stand about useless antifoulings!

Hello again Colin. Long time no see.

You used to be a regular on this forum and I always appreciated your postings cos you could rely on them from your insider knowledge of new gear etc and testing on your long cruise every year.

I have missed you. Where have you been? Are you coming back? Bout time.
