really depends what you want/can put up with, I usually get something like a clio/corsa/fiesta for £30-40 for a weekend, local place I use does a deal, so worth shopping around...
But I still say "hundreds" would be less than you're paying to run a car for a year, if you honestly take into account tax disc, maintenance/repair insurance and depreciation. I reckon you'd be pushed to run a banger for a year for under say £700 (excluding fuel), let alone something more... comfortable.
