Something I was unaware of ...

==========

Motorists going abroad after 8 June are being warned they will need to take a special code with them if they want to hire a car.

From that date the paper counterpart of UK driving licences - which records endorsements and fines - is being computerised.

Anyone wanting to hire a car abroad will officially need a code to show convictions for offences like speeding.

To obtain it, motorists will have to log on to the DVLA website beforehand.

But the code is only valid for 72 hours, so anyone wanting to hire a car more than three days into their trip will need to generate a new code while they are abroad.

Have they told every single car-hire office across all the countries in the world?

For what it's worth, a mate of mine caused problems, rather than avoided them, by showing his paper counterpart at a US car hire desk. They knew that UK driving licenses were usually pink cards, and they also knew that some British people had funny paper things instead (the old licenses), but they were highly suspicious that he had both - "why do you have two driving licenses?"

I think it's a bit of a non story. I've hired I'm guessing 80 cars abroad over the last 10 years and never been asked for the paper part of my driving licence. I don't think any other country has a two part licence anyway. It's only in the UK I've been asked for both.

It is true - until you meet a numpty who HAS read the email.. and who becomes a right jobsworth....

Best idea is get the code, but don't offer it until asked.
