Everybody seems to be correct in pointing out that the brake fluid reservoir needs attention.

The snag is that we are assuming that StellaGirl knows how to open the bonnet!

Only one thing to add...If it is using brake fluid get it checked by a garage. It could be a slave cyclinder, the master cyclinder or the pipework. Once air gets into the system life can get very interesting. one a leak starts it can suddenly get worse.....Leave plenty of room between you and the car infront. especially if it has an RNLI sticker on it might be a forum member )

Cheek of it...

I am not completely useless with cars you know! I can change a battery and a tyre quite happily....all learnt after the need arose. I will be able to sort brake fluid (assuming its that) after this saga as I will have learnt how. You should give us girls a bit more credit than that!

The usual way to "use" brake fluid is to get the brakes bled by the garage who then forget to top up the reservoir sufficiently. That's how I learned what the little red light means....

The Ford level switch was a troublesome bit of kit, at least it was on my Fiesta. I've not had any problems with the Peugeot one though.

I drive a 306. there are 2 brake warning lights. One to worry about, the other just to tell you the handbrake is on.

the one to worry about is in the box at the top of the display and does not normally come on when you switch the engine on. It shows a circle with two semi circles inside it. If it is lighting up you have a brake fault developing and must get it checked: brake pad wear indicators (you can easily knock a pad out in a year if the caliper is sticking), and fluid level indicator are connected to it amongst other things. You must get it sorted immediately if it is showing or flickering, as you could be about to lose your brakes. And we do not wish to lose your erudite contributions to the forum, please!

The other warning light is at the middle of the bottom of the panel and comes on with 2 other warning lights when you switch on. This is the one that stays on after the engine starts, and goes off when you release the handbrake. If it is flickering, the switch has come loose and needs tightening back down. Or you are not letting the handbrake off properly ..... Thats all!

Dave - although I agree about 309 electrics, NEVER tell a lady not to worry about brake warning lights - unless you are married to her and dont want to line the lawyers pockets.

With an old 309 it probably is just a loose wire. But then again it might not be...
