Captain Sensible or what?

I would probaby tack and give them more room still. The advantage of passing ahead would be that if you DID cause them to alter course they would be hardening up a touch, which invariably is better than having to soak down, and reducing AWS.

I've certainly been in that position before (in particular it was very difficult to avoid the action for the Americas Cup Jubilee week - and we always made a point of keeping well out of averybodys wind, regardless of ColRegs.

Could'nt do that with the rest of the fleet bearing down on me! Mmmn if I did though I could cut across them all shouting "Windward boats give way!" That would help my friend with the spinnaker even more I suppose!

No chance of hardening up even more, thereby slowing you down a tad? Even easing the sheets a bit if you could maintain course. That would give him a submissive message, if you were really wanting not to hinder!

Why not

Just ease your sheets a little to slow down and pass further from his stern?

No way should you pass close ahead - too much potential confusion and you are both vulnerable to any unexpected factor - such as you hitting some wash and slowing down or stopping right ahead of him.

Dump the main

sheet the headsail to windward and just sit it out for a while - maybe put the kettle on, maybe go and stand on the foredeck and watch, maybe give them a wave and an appreciative gesture, maybe get the camera out and get a decent photo then let them have a copy if you know where the boat is from. If you are not racing then you are cruising which means you've all the time in the world.

I think we discussed this in person, and I am sure you said you have acted in the past.
However I spose I have to defend my club who are one of the groups of the sinners who clog up soton water with loonatic 40 footers. Apart from major races, the only weekend races in soton water are in the winter and spring (winter, frostbite and spring series'). These are held (in theory) the area is less busy on a sunday morning. Also I know that racers who infringe the col regs with either commercial or pleasure yachting are immediately disqualified provided the race comittee is notified.

If you are badly done too by a racing "yobo" (they are not all bad, honest), give Soton VTS a shout on 12 or 14 and they will support you. The clubs who race on soton water and solent are very much at the mercy of VTS and QHM who can REMOVE their right to race without question or redress!!

Yes that was last year when I was nearly rammed twice by the same boat when it was on port and I was on starboard. I wrote to the RSYC about that and to be honest its the only problen I've ever had.
However Soton water is narrow and if you are beating down it, it is extremely aggravating to have the whole area of the making tack filled with large racing yachts!

Very true, the "but we are racing" argument cuts no ice with me whatsoever. I admire the point of this post with the inference that you would, despite your experiences, make allowances for a racing yacht. Not sure I would be that understanding!

I suggested this impossibility in an earlier post but by the lack of responses everyone considers it is possible.

So, can someone explain how in the situation of Jimi's original post - ie you are beating on port tack and by holding your course you will pass just behind a starboard race boat on a spinnaker run - you can possibly bear off and be fast enough to pass in front of him? It would seem to me that if you can do that one should be touting for a job as start helmsman in the next America's Cup.

It seems an extremely unlikely possibility to me and maybe accounts for some of the confusion and gripes that race boats may have about some of the more sedate users of the same water (I don't race).

quite right .. the only way it would work is if there was a mutual understandingg between me and the race boat ie I bear away a bit and the race boat alters slightly to starboard to pass behind me, giving me a wee wave as he does so for my kind and considerate behaviour!

You are a true sailor Jimi and all other sins that are claimed of you by some others are, as far as I am concerned, forgiven (but only because I like parrots too!).

Jimi

Collapse his spinnaker. He will be expecting that.

Was it Peyton?

The best cartoon (probably in PBO) was the man on a small wooden sailboat sailing with a megaphone shouting to the impending disaster,

"Sail"

The appoaching disaster on a non changing course had a bullhorn and from the bridge of his megewhatsit was shouting,

"STEEL"
