I've just watched the video clip of Cap'n Calamity on a Cornish beach.
Have I missed something?
I know the media like to set people up for public ridicule, but is it justified in this case?
OK, he capsized a beach cat in the surf, not that unusual surely. Nothing appears to have broken and he walks ashore, apparently ready for another go. He's wearing appropriate gear and the boat looks in good order. I don't think I would expect to be "rescued" in those circumstances.
I bet the surfer also capsized a few times, why didn't the lifeboat insist on saving his life?
I don't believe he was 100 nm [nautical miles?] offshore either.

He was featured on Jeremy Vine today but I did not hear the start of the feature. I assume there has been a new rescue? He was insisting that he did not need to be rescued but detail was thin. No shortage of 'experts' telling us that licensing was essential, as was compulsory training and payment for rescue.

I listened to him on the radio yesterday, seems he likes to go out in rough windy conditions which sometimes tips his cat over, he can always right it and get on his way, but worried members of the public onshore see him tip over and call the LB.

Another example of junk media reporting-the guy is just having fun but "grannies on the cliff top" do not understand that and with the best of intentions cause a lifeboat call out. The media should correct this poor reporting but that would probably be a first! Feel a bit sorry for the poor chap being made out to be a chump when he is just stretching himself without any problems to others.

Listened to him on Jeremy Vine show, just a guy enjoying himself - are we still allowed to do that? Says he likes extreme sailing and often capsises his cat but, on all but (IIRC) 2 occasions, has not needed help. With 15 lifeboat call outs, there was some suggestion when Jeremy was talking to someone from the local authority, that it may be possible to be banned from sailing if he persists.

One rather good suggestion from a caller to the program was that he takes a waterproof mobile or VHF with him so the CG can ask if he needs help before a callout is instituted.

Under what law are they going to 'ban him from going sailing'?

News must be slow for some journalists or perhaps there's a pro-licencing lobby group in the background?

Two reasons I am suspicious.

Firstly its a non story that keeps getting hyped up. Who's pushing it?
Secondly, if public support started to be generated for banning the man from sailing, the next question would be. "how?" One answer would be, "We can't ban him but if all boaters were licensed then you could take away their ticket and prevent them from being a danger to themselves..."

Perhaps I am reading too much into this. I don't buy conspiracy theories as a rule, but there's something slightly odd about this story...

...

I don't think this guy is the Captain Calamity who kept getting rescued whilst sailing around the coast. The ban idea sounds pretty silly, AFAIK he hasn't broken any laws or bylaws so don't see how they could issue an exclusion order.

Perhaps he is pushing things too far?

He likes to sail on the limit (which is fine) but does so without a safety boat and has had 15 callouts to date. One day he may tip over, receive a crack to his head, and end up unconcious in cold water. Maybe he needs to find a better/safer way of enjoying his sailing?

15 callouts does seem to be rather a lot for one individual. I'm glad that people raise the alarm and that the RNLI does go out.

I once had HMCG meet me in the lock at Sovereign Yacht Harbour because I had been reported as being in distress.
Apparently some fishermen had seen me in trouble because I had been "zig zagging " [or tacking, in nautical jargon]
