I need (for a very brief, uncomplicated, non-mechanical reason which doesn't warrant description here) two steel 25mm ball bearings. Where am I to find them? A place in Fareham can supply them at nearly a fiver each...plus a few quid more for postage...but that seems a lot for not very much.

Is there a cheap, dependable 2nd/3rd/28th-hand source for such things? SWMBO says 'boot sales', but I reckon I could get up early for several weekends and stumble round hundreds of rainswept stalls before happening upon the right-sized bearings.

If I have to spend £12 on a new pair, I'll keep them in my hand for the rest of my days, rotating them neurotically like Humphrey Bogart in The Caine Mutiny.

Thanks Pete, that's usefully cheaper than I'd found before. No postage cost either. :) Sorry, I must get into the Captain Queeg scowl, instead...

we used to play marbles with them in school - it took 10 hits with a glass ball to win a steel one - needless to say I lost all my glass balls trying. :(

Credit to the supplier - I only ordered the steel balls yesterday morning, and they were in my postbox today. I'd expected them to take their time.

Rather exasperatingly, it turns out that one of the balls I needed should have been 18mm instead of 25mm...but on the upside, I can have that here too, tomorrow morning...:)

I think QI did a session about this...the balls were thought to be like clock-weights, and the extra mass of their increasing size was blamed by the ancients for deeper adult voices...
