Canvas re-proofing liquids - any good or just a con?

I sold outdoor rugs for horses (called New Zealand Rugs as aparrently it rains a lot there) and the same cheap cotton material is used in their manufacturer as in the manufacture of Boat Sprayhoods. So if you want a good waterproofer go to your local Tack Shop. I also sold Nikwax but there are many. If you could find a Tack Shop which repairs New Zealand Rugs you would find that they could probably do repairs.

Lots of suggestions here for products for retreatment, but our first and most important recommendation – regardless of who manufactured the fabric – would be to visit the manufacturer’s web site. Most manufacturers will list a recommended product for retreating their fabric (for Sunbrella, this is 303 Fabric Guard).

Although our recommended product is 303 Fabric Guard, we do recognize that there are number of retreatment products on the market. For Sunbrella, products that are specifically designed for fabric “should” be fine, but avoid any product that is silicon-based. Products that are not specifically designed for fabric – like Thompson’s Water Seal – should not be applied and unfortunately would void your fabric warranty.

+1 for masonry sealer. Colourless, cheap and effective.

(I also use a masonry paint for my non-slip areas: Macphersons Finetex, colour-matched to my sample and costing only €24.50 for 5litres)

fabsil in a 5l can and one of the old mr muscle sprayers or similar.Have to flush out with water after or don't work the following year.wind free day too.

If you use a paintbrush you don't need to wait for a still day, you can ensure the material is well-wetted and avoid the Fabsil going where you don't want it. You still have to rinse the brush if you want to use it again the following year, though.

It is important to keep run off from the fabsil off the windows as they can be permantly marked. We would recomend 303 or fabsil gold.

I've just used Renovo too and it has certainly smartened the spray hood up no end. Can't comment on waterproofing yet but worth it for appearance alone.

I used the Renovo cleaner, blue dye and reproofer last summer and I think it's excellent stuff. Certainly waterproof and colour fast on the Thames, but I don't know how well it would perform in salt water.

Interesting stuff. Any idea on how permanent it is - I was thinking about using it as an antifoul coating? Probably make the boat go faster in fresh water too!

I actually don't know how permanent it is sadly, I asked for this to be put forward into our product line, but the powers that be on that side are..quirky, to say the least….I keep meaning to pick up a pack with my B&Q hat on and give it a good testing.

The boat go faster bit has been discussed on here previously quite extensively, apparently the opposite is true. I don’t pretend to understand the black magic of physics that surrounds this, but it has something to do with the need for water friction against the hull to expedite it’s movement through it….
