Would'nt it be easier to have a canting mast than a canting keel especially if you had an unstayed carbon fibre pole with a hydraulic joint at the bottom?

I've been googling without success, but I remember reading (prolly in Voiles et Voiliers) about a French boat, based Cherbourg, which had a mast stepped on a ring frame which also incorporated the chainplates (and maybe the keel mounting???) so that rig heeled to the wind but the hull stayed more or less level. Can any one else find it?

I recall seeing something about that - the mast canted away - on a rotating frame that swung the keel to windward - the hull remained upright ....

You'll find some video AYRS here

showing some canting-mast craft at Portland Speed Week - and a few other daft-ideas-that-work, too!

The basic idea is that the capsizing force in a vertical rig is converted to lifting force in a canting rig, with a reduction in wetted area and an increase in speed...... or so they say.

Actually, rather a lot of good ideas have been developed from 'notions' first dreamed up by the nutters who are Amateur Yacht Research Society members, and you'll find that quite a lot of progressive pro designers are members, to keep an eye on the latest 'daft inventions'. Just now and then, one or other of these is viable......

Ah memories - most of the vid was taken in the harbour at Portland. I used to go and watch as I was aviating from the naval base at the time. I remember seeing the first bloke to exceed 40kts on a wind surfer. Got so in to it I became an AYRS member and even designed an aerofoil type sail. Which proves that not all AYRS members are nutters.

Now there's a bit of a non sequitur for you......

...some of us used to call the Fleet Air Arm guys 'the good, the bad and the ugly' at Grab-A-Midwife parties at Treliske Royal Hospital, halfway between RNAS Culdrose and RAF St Mawgan. When the boy sailors turned up, usually late, we'd take to whistling the theme tune - even the girls! Scowls all round!

Completely off topic, but so what - Don't remember those parties but certainly remember having a lot of fun, quite often at the expense of the light blue but lets not get into inter service rivalry betwen the Junior and Senior services.
