Re: steady now

um, bit strong, no? The new guy is asking genuine questions and many put people this way these days. A troll would be more contentious, surely?

Anyway, as usual, i agree with Deleted User comments - the squaddie is likely a better bet.

I would be quite happy about a near-new boat as per planty - still under warranty and coded sounds excellent - whereas when you order it new you think it's gonna be perfect and it isn't. All the grief of the testing and so on is gone, and you get a cheap deal when the boat just has to be a load cheaper and essentially brand new.

troll .... i still dont know what it means .....somebody pls tell me

regardless ..the wife and me seatrialled the manhattan 56 on wed 10th march and the boat we were offered was the one with the owners cabin midship therefore enjoying the full beam of the vessel

while we were at the yrd we also did have a chance to see the same boat with the owners cabin forward which my wife was not too happy abt
however she did like the main saloon layout on the latter boat which regrettfully was not available with midship cabin layout

unfortunately i was by myself at the dubai boat show where i seatrialed the squadron and was absolutely pleased with the main saloon and flybridge area

after much convincing abt the time that one spends in the accomodation area is far less than the time in the social area the wife was convinced to have a look at the squadron ..which she did this morning (at their factory in oundle) and is also now convinced abt the "lot more boat for yr money ' factor that comes with the squadie
somehow i am not very comfortable with a used boat and the fact its coded means its been on commercial charter..... a definate no go area for me

GJGM
i already know what engines i want but tks for yr offer for help in that dept...

the new sunseeker being offered is with cat 3406e engines and the squadie is already got the volvo d12 715 on order(everything but the engine spec can be changed on the sqaudie)
i would liked cat c12 in either case

Wiggo
any experience with peters?
had a long and pleasant telcon with robert (mrtallsheep) who has phantom 46
who was not very pleased with peters

interesting bit abt mrs big moose and curtains in yr post ...... thats the way it generally works doesnt it? ...the wife/partner choses the curtains etc while the husband/man chooses the engines and the tech bits ...OR WAS IT THE OTHER WAY AROUND IN YR CASE?

Sq58 is orlrite

Chetan:
Hi, I got a yellow alert blip on the trollometer too but will proceed :)

We got a new Sq58 2004 model couple of weeks ago. Some random observations:

1. The hattan 56 is a lot smaller, a foot less beam. That ruled it out for us. It just feels much more cramped. There are lots of other things, like the Sq has better flybridge etc. The owner mid cabin hattan obviously gives a great mid cabin but at a big price in the living areas, eg the position of the galley. So, accom wise the Sq is streets ahead imho

2. The hattan has v drives and aft engines. I have not taken them in big seas but a delivery skipper I crossed the channel with recently told me the balance was bad as a result and the bow lifts over waves more, making less the ride less comfortable

3. The Sq has option of one more cabin, 5 cabins in all, good if you have kids

4. The hattan is 100k cheaper though

5. We are delighted with the Sq 58 design. I love the downstairs helm for long sea passages (I have done about 400miles in last 2 weeks, X channel and across bay of genoa). It is miles better than the hattan56 here. It is a superb soft riding hull even in big waves, imho

6. My personal opinion of Peters is that they are incompetent. It was not a pleasure dealing with them. For a little while and legal reasons I cant give details. Just dont assume things will be done right or on time or at all. Or if they do actually do the job you want, you might find they'll cause some damage in the process, one step forward 2 steps back. I'm just philosophical about it, it's part of the process of buying a fairline and the factory seems to take no interest. If you do decide to order, I'll talk to you offline about some stuff if you like. By the way, many of their people are pleasant and nice to deal with, nothing personal, it's just that as an organisation looking at the whole project they just do not function properly, and as a result dealing with them isn't fun in my opinion. There are still many snags on our boat, despite the fact Peters had it for about 6-7 weeks before we took possession

7. As someone said there is a nice 2003 new on the market. But dont buy seconhand, buy new. That 2003 boat is listed at £670+VAT. You can get a fully specced new boat for less than that so why bother with a used boat? They will offer significant discount off list price. Also some of the 2002 boats listed on the internet are tatty, despite described as mint or whatever, not worth your time. I have inspected and sea trialled some of them. Also the 2004 model is quite a bit improved over 2003 - new bigger portholes that make the cabins lighter, all chrome inside instead of horrid gold/chrome mixed up, electric pop up flatscreenTV, lots of other details

8. Re engines I personally would choose the Volvo d12s (which we did). They are cheaper to start with, but their performance is stunning. They are incredibly quiet - on the flybridge at 23knots you can almost not hear them, literally. It's the quietest mobo I've ever been on. They are also very economical and smoke free. Almost 1 mpg. We got 34.4 knots on ours on a flat sea off Antibes day before yesterday, on log and GPS, with a clean bottom, 3/4 fuel and water, 3 persons, and 250kg tender on board. We even have ropecutters fitted. That is outstanding - the brochure says 31 knots.

9. Where will you moor it? This can affect the VAT position.

Peters

For what its worth I bought a used Fairline from Peters a couple of years back but from their Port Fairline operation in Mallorca and I found it actually quite a pleasant experience. By and large they fixed any warranty probs and their guardiennage staff were excellent at least compared to South of France
On the other hand I tried to sell the boat recently through their Chichester operation and whilst their staff are nice enough on an individual basis, they were pretty useless at actually selling the boat and, in exasperation, I moved the boat away from them to another broker who got an offer almost straightaway

Re: steady now

Peters, hmm? Tried to buy a boat from them last year, but they weren't interested in dealing. Tried again this year, same result, so I'm buying a Sealine now. Speak to Hagrid - he's on his second F'line from Peters and they seem to have screwed up delivery on both - incapable of getting work done on time and to spec. He spent most of last year getting them back to fix stuff that should have been done pre-delivery.

In our case, Management acts as a veto on decisions: I can have any engines/electronics/whatever I like, but if there is something that she doesn't like about the boat, then the whole thing is off. E.g. looked at F36 and F37. The 36 already had davits, a proper(ish) chart table, and a better (IMHO) TV/drinks cabinet/saloon fridge. But management didn't like blue upholstery, and the 37 had blinds. So that was that. Another 10k for the boat, plus 3.5k to put a crane on...

Re: In My Dreams

You're absolutely right, very tempting if only I had the dosh!!
If anybody else is interested though there's a lovely Manhattan 64 Mark 1! circa 2001 (thats without the tilting swim platform for tender retrieval) that really is a treat and coded, very well presented internally even down to the full Axminster over carpets, needs a good polish externally though. Its at the pre used section of Sunseeker Sales, Poole and is part of the deal done when they sold to the Germans, and on brokerage by the ex Sunseekers owners, thus I am reliably informed is very open to offers. I would have loved to have part ex'd for this boat, if only, if only. Guaranteed to be gone by the time I'm ready. If ever! Good lady was head over heels with it though, so perhaps another day, another year?? Thats what I love about boating...........Dreaming! Paul

Re: In My Dreams

At the risk of sounding like a real Olde F@rte, Big Moose was the name of a powerboat, built in the 1960's for a guy called John Willment (I think) who was in Property (I think). She was built to take part in Class 1 offshore races and was large, slow and ugly, so not suprisingly didn't do too well. What this has to do with a Goanese ore magnate remains uncertain but you can be sure, as we're on the internet, that there's a conspiracy lurking in there somewhere.

Byron would no doubt know the full story............../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Not sure if you are still in the deciding mode or not; but we just went through much the same exercise between the same two (and other similar sized) boats.
We will take delivery of the Manhattan 56 in four weeks, but our decision was based on our particular usage and may not apply to you.
My wife and I will be using the boat to tour the Med for a couple of years--with periodic trips back to the States. 80% of the time, we will be the only two people on the boat, with occasional visits by a single couple for a week or so at a time.
Therefore, we chose the Manhattan because:
The full beam master appealed to us--we enlaged bunk width by 15cm.
The aft swim platform makes it easier for the two of us to launch the tender.
We converted midship cabin to a laundry room.
Galley location not the best, but we will not be cooking for many people very often.
May not be the best criteria for choosing a boat--and I concur with the strong points about the Fairline mentioned by others--, but we hope it will satisfy our needs.
If you wish to discuss this further, my email is:
