Cant calibrate an Autohelm ST2000!

I've been quite unable to get into th calibration mode on my ST2000 Autohelm. I've followed both the original and the amended instructions. Press standby for 5 secs then press it again within 5 secs. I just cant get in. The display just goes back to compass mode. This AH dates from 1994. Has anyone with a model of this age managed to crack the system?

Mines the same vintage - last calibrated about 5 years ago.
