Thanks guys, I am really amzed all the different answers people are giving. I appreciate there are some variables involved here but the numbers given swing from one extreme to the other.

Re: Can\'t be right... can it?

Hi guys - read with interest.

I do own a Regal 1800 with this engine and do "blat" around Poole / Studland however you guys are far to technical for me!! I have not once sat down and done the sums on fuel consumption so I am afraid I will not be much use.

I can tell you that I love this engine in this boat. Planes up to about 35 - 37mph however this is on the boat speedo so probably not vary accurate (feels very fast). If you get a chance take a test trip and get ready for some fun! We use it around beaches etc and can often have a weekends fun for £10 - £15.

I would recommend the yahoo group someone mentioned. I posted a question recently and no end of useful advice. Quite unbelievable there is a group dedicated to an engine - "whatever floats your boat" as they say!

Re: Can\'t be right... can it?

Thanks Dave, thats really what I wanted to hear. I am happy to burn and pay for fuel when pulling a wakeboard or ringo or having a blat but I also want to poodle around, chill out and not have to spend a fortune doing so.

If we can have a cruise up the river and around the harbours of Chichester and only spend £10-15 for a half day then that is ideal and the best of both worlds.

How much do you pay for a service for the 1.7dti inboard?

I also read there are some issues with the bearing for the wastegate seizing and the turbo getting broken. Have you had any issues?

Rich - The Yahoo users group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cummins_mercruiser_120hp_DTI/

They are a great crowd who love the 1.7 over there, mainly in the States

If your engine's serial number starts with 88, your engine has resolved most of the piston failure issues. However the wastegate issue still stands.

Basicly, there's a small bearing on the actuator (sp?) arm that seizes which prevents the wastegate from opening, hence over-boosting the engine. By rights, the wastegate should never even need to open. The wastegate opens when the engine is being laboured hence over-boosts. To be safe, I under-pitched my engine (Allowing it to over-rev) to make sure the engine was never laboured, even with a load on board. You have to be careful never to keep the throttle pushed down fully when planing (to avoid over-revving) but it was nice to know that I wasn't labouring the engine. This would be my main recommendation if buying a 1.7

Secondly would be to keep the wastegate/actuator(sp?)/arm lubed up. Mouse Milk (US Product, can be bought online - Do a Google) is a high temp lube which people seem to recommend. I gave that whole turbo area a good lash of that each time before and after going out on the boat, just to be safe.

Hope this helps, PM me if you think I can help with anything, although i'm far from an expert

Re: Can\'t be right... can it?

As I said, I am just about to go afloat with a pair of these in a 26' cruiser.. so its great to see all the info above and the yahoo group. I'll be sure to keep my turbo's lubricated and am considering fitting boost pressure gauges which until now I always thought were just for show but I understand they will quickly show if the waste gate is sticking as the boost pressure will be too high... cheers for now...
