Hi, am looking to make a canopy for our boat. From research believe Weather max 80 would be a good material for this. Primary purpose of this would be to keep off the sun while anchored in the med. Have some one who can make it up for us.

Would appreciate people's views on this and if they have any different suggestions. As well as keeping the sun off the material needs to be fairly light weight for stowing away. We do have a substantial bimini already but want this canopy to be larger and over arching.

In addition we are having problems sourcing a supplier for this, at the moment the only one we have found is in the U.S.
I have e-mailed general@contender.co.uk, but no reply and from the web site appears they may only supply to the trade?

Any help would be appreciated

Ours is made from canvas, material bought at Abakhan (Google them). It was intended for artists' use, for oil painting. Requirements are that it should be stiff enough not to flap in a good breeze. Buy fibreglass poles from a camping shop, ours are 14 mm diameter, five per 3 metre span, which almost covers the beam. They fit into pockets sewn into the awning. There are ties at each end of each pocket for attaching to guard wires and halyards.

Here's a pic of it. This was in its development days when the poles were pvc tubing, so rather too floppy and not adjusted properly. The fibreglass ones are almost straight.

3 lengths of electrical conduit, sewn unto pockets, one each end and one in the middle. A length of rope to run from backstay to mast (above your bimini), if you are not too worried about keeping out the rain, talk to your sailmaker, he will have a blown kite laying around. or use shade cloth.

Simple, cheap and light. Stow on the side deck.
