Mine was, and it's rather light in colour (Linssen Beige!) and so I could never get it properly clean and free from greenish algae.

I'm really pleased after I sent if off to Hancock Marine Services in Devon. I removed the canopy and sent it to them by carrier, within a week I had a sparkling clean canopy returned, all just over £100. Very efficient service.

I have no connection with the Company but felt others might be interested. Hancock Marine are specialist sail canvas cleaners, they have a web site at www.sailcanvascleaning.co.uk or you can contact them for a quote on info@hancockmarineservices.co.uk.

A bit of elbow grease, a jet washer and some EVM gets canopies clean and sparkly for a lot less than £100 (assuming you own some elbow grease, a jet washer and some EVM before hand :))

Ours get a good scrub in March/April then a good lathering of Fabsil and that lasts them through until September/October when they get another hose down and another application of Fabsil to see them through the winter.

But not all of us actually want, or are physically able, to exert effort on jobs like this. What you are really saying is that DIY is cheaper - we know that!

LimL had found his own efforts unsatisfactory and chose to farm the job out to a commercial service which he was happy to pay for - especially so when he was so pleased with the end result.

I recently chose to use professional services to refurbish my cabin doors. The result was far better than I could have achieved myself and I was happy to pay for such good service.

£30 an hour for skilled labour is pretty cheap these days - most main motor dealers charge closer to £100 an hour.

What matters is individual choice and if we all went down the DIY route for everything we need doing there would pretty soon be no tradesmen left and a lot of extra unemployed people needing state handouts.

And if we all went down the route of using so called experts or professionals for each and every job that needed doing on boats there would be less money going into the local economy in general as we would all be skint and weilding empty wallets. £100 to wash a canopy, a job that can be done in a couple of hours easily and with little effort, is £100 less money going behind the bar:D

I think it looks like a great service. using a Jet wash just kills the stitching after a year or so.

I especially like the fact that they are in "Laundry Lane"

It was only an idea guys, that I thought might interest others! I did try jetwash but this just left horizontal lines unless you were really aggressive - and as is pointed out this could damage the stitching etc. I think they provided a first class job and excellent service...

Hated the annual canopy clean so your post has prompted me to contact my canopy manufacturers re a clean and reproof of my 3 year old covers.

Just got the reply - Travel to marina and remove covers from boat, take to premises to clean, then return and refit - £85 + VAT

Re-proof at the same time, although they said it should not be necessary, but would protect and preserve it better - £85 + the dreaded.

I should point out that they attend Naburn Marina about twice a week, so they are not going out of their way.

Now I have to figure if I will bother with the reproofing - or more precisely figure out how to get SWMBO to release the purse strings to pay for it if it is not strictly required.

Jetwashing destroys canopies.

An alternative, especially at reasonable sums of money is a good thing to know!

Cheers for that!
