My 12x36 IS Canon stabilised binocular started to buzz when the IS button was pressed
and if it was not pressed, there is a double image so I sent it back to Canon in Elstree.
They sent an estimate for £156 which I accepted.
Just got it back today in exactly the same condition with a letter saying it can't be repaired as the spares are not available.
So a £650 binocular destined for the dump.
I also know that if you break the battery cover on your 10x30 IS, Canon will charge about £90 to fit a new one.

Buyers beware.

Wont these be covered on your boat or home insurance?

Canon say they try to keep spares for 5 to 7 years. I think mine is about 7 years old.
They still sell a 12x36 stabilised but it is Mark 2.

The bino shows a double image if the IS button is not pressed but there is only one aligned image
when it is pressed and the IS works BUT there is an annoying buzz from inside.

Be careful you don't accidentally drop them from a great height on to concrete, you might then have to make an insurance claim.

If the OP is Richard of Action Optics, 'a specialist repair workshop' with 'a reputation for being able to repair binoculars' I wonder if the offending article has been dismantled yet? If so a technical exposition would be welcome. In particular it may help those of us that treasure our Canon IS binoculars to protect them from the same fate.

Who doesn't seem to sell them, hence my MRDA comment above.

I had to look it up and for others not in the know:

MRDA' an abbreviation for Mandy Rice-Davies Applies is Internet slang meaning "well he would say that, wouldn't he"? - Used to indicate cynicism of a statement of fact due to the obvious bias of the person stating the fact.[1]
History
The source of the acronym comes from The Profumo Affair, a 1963 political scandal in the United Kingdom. While giving evidence at the trial of Stephen Ward, charged with living off the immoral earnings of Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies, Rice-Davies made a quip for which she is now best remembered. When the prosecuting counsel pointed out that Lord Astor denied an affair or having even met her, she replied, "He would, wouldn't he?" (often misquoted as "Well, he would, wouldn't he?" or "Well he would say that, wouldn't he?").

No, the offending article has not been dismantled yet. I am still trying to find someone who might have a 12x36 Mk1 with a different fault so that we can make one good unit from the two. If that does not work then I would be tempted to have a look inside.
