Hello people. I have lost a few friends to Cancer in the last few years so am doing a sponsored 100 mile cycle ride from Cardiff Bay Yacht Club to Avonmouth and back later this month. My previous longest ride is 60 so it will be a challenge.

Thanks Graham

Will definately sponser you and will make no jokes about bikes on water, aquabikes or crossing the channel on a bike!
What route are you taking?

Thanks for that. Route is from CBYC out of Cardiff via Cardiff Bay and Rover Way ,Lamby way out onto the coast road across the Wentloog Levels to Newport then onto the Gwent levels and a short way on the A48 then down Wye Valley link road onto the old Bridge then along A403 to Avonmouth.I have ridden it before but only one way from Avonmouth to Barry.

PS. my mate did same route on uni cycle but only one way. He might join you, Great guy (my old flying instructor) Also cycled N.France with him. I will ask him if you want company.

Morning Andy Thanks for the offer of speaking to your mate but I would rather do my first hundred miler on my own,its easier to stick to a comfortable pace that way also I can just do a last minute weather forecast check and go if Im on my own .

I did the route one way from Avonmouth to Barry last week with 2 mates which was 60 miles so fairly confident I can go the distance ,cant imagine doing it on a unicycle though :-)..

I'm sure you know the score Graham, but I used to do a lot of mountain biking. Don't forget to keep snacking, and drinking, even when not hungry or thirsty. If you run out of energy, and then start eating, it will be well over an hour before you feel better.

Dont worry the stone of Donuts are on order :-)

First 60 miler I did I sat down and had a big lunch at a picnic area. Big mistake, very hard to get going again after so the plan now is small amounts of food and drink but very often.Have 3 waterbottles and will refill if I can. Looking forward to it now Cheers Graham

Other tip is don't do what we did..... 4 pints of beer on the ferry to France then massive hill to cycle up with more than my weight of kit.
not funny!!

Done it today

Originally planned on doing it near the end of the month but weather was so perfect i did the ride today.

Bit of a setback at the Gwent Levels the only road from East to West was closed poff completely as its slipped into the rheen. There was a big barrier erected so no way around or over it I had to backtrack up to the A48 about 6 or 8 wasted miles :-( .

Got going again and decided to stop short of Avonmouth as I didnt want to do more than 100.

Found a really pleasant pl;ace overlooking the Estuary for some lunch then set of back sticking to the main roads to keep the speed up.

Round trip was 100.3 miles at an average speed of 12.8 which I was pleased with.

Just giving page will remain open for a few weeks if anyone wants to donate. Many thanks to those who allready have. Cheers Graham
