an acquaintance has cancelled at very short notice a trip on his boat from Loch Melfort to Fleetwood. I have rarely seen the insides of his wallet but I was gobsmacked when the auld goat appeared ready to open it to compensate me for the upfront expenses I have incurred.

I mean, easyjet wouldn't be impressed and would have pocketed the lot?

These are: fish smoker, trawling gear, new hat, warm clothing, rearranging collection of pension .. but have I missed anything?

Erm Yes. I had to replace the Volvo with a Merc 300SD cos I was'nt sure if the left offside was'nt going a wee bit baldish and my new set of Musto HPX bought specially for the trip .. and the new integrated chart plotter / radar to replace Claymore's ageing asdic system ..

The inner man (and woman)

Don't forget the supper at the Quatre Saisons (you local caff, I believe) you'll be forced to buy for Madam and yergoodself, now there's only food in the fridge for one.

Actually I'm feeling a bit ashamed of myself just in case the auld goat have a valid reason for cancelling or perhaps it was just a senior whim?

Re: Senior whim ...

Para, one can understand the state of undoubted shock enfolding you at this unfortunate development, but as ever your overwhelming generosity has overlooked the case of 1989 Fleurie and the 3 litres of vintage malt that you had arranged to be supplied for the epic. Costs???
