From the RYA website:
First call for boaters to stand for election for Canal & River Trust Council
Seven positions on the 35-strong council are to be filled by boaters or boating businesses. Four positions are to be elected by British Waterway boat licence holders and two positions elected by boating businesses.
The British Canoe Union, which holds a collective licence for around 60,000 individual and club members, will be asked to nominate a person to fill a further position representing all those who use the waterways for waterborne sport and recreation without holding individual licences.
A Canal & River Trust employee will also be elected by all employees at this time to serve on the Council.
To be eligible to stand for election and vote in the election, boaters must hold a British Waterway 12-month boat licence on 18 January 2012. Nominations must be supported by ten sponsors who each also hold a valid 12-month boat licence on this date.

One wonders what will happen if/when the EA navigations are included. Will more council places be created to permit representation of river users?

Any narrowboat peeps here who qualify feel like being nominated to make sure we have a foot in the door? Would actually need eleven of you as TEN sponsors must also each hold BW licences.

I would have thought their Ts & Cs would eliminate any NBs on the River - unless of course they are foolish enough to have a Gold licence (which is an exceedingly poor deal for a Thames boater). It's much cheaper to buy an explorer licence for occasional trips up the ditches.

Even so there are only four seats on the huge council for boaters - those who actually pay for the use of the system. The other seats are for councils, tree huggers, cyclists fishermen et al.

Pah!

OK - found a possible answer to my question re what happens IF EA navigations get transferred in some commentary on the Trust Website:
In its response to the consultation, Government proposed a Council of 35, which could increase to 50 in future, for example in the event of EA navigations joining the Trust, but also to increase the number of elected seats.

A fisherman rites.

Ahem .....a fishing license varies from £30 to £75.00 squids a year, plus probably a club membership of around £150.00.
The EA issue around 1 million licenses PA and bet a goodly proportion of those are based in the Thames valley.
A wild guess might even suggest that anglers provide at least as much income as boaters.

There are 5 seats on the council for boaters.

However one is appointed.

Interesting point about the fishing licences, that'll make for interesting negotiations when / if they look at moving over the EA navigable rivers.
