can you tell if your chosen \" new \" boats name is already in use?

I've been to the SSR & the registry part 1 sites, how do you check if the name you want is already on the water

ps got any good names / not cheesy for a 40ft cruiser, , yes I've just read 200 details of search on Boat Names... still struggling

It is only a problem if you want to give your boat Pt 1 registration, and there is another pt 1 registered boat of the same name. SSR doesnt matter if you use the same name.

You could try checking on here

jema - ssr only costs £15. Go for that, as far as I can see Pt1 is really only needed if you have a mortgage/ charge on the boat.

thanks, are there any advantages of a part 1 registration over ssr

[/ QUOTE ] SSR does not confer legal proof of ownership, while Pt1 does. If the boat is not new and has not been previously Pt1 registered, you have to be able to track ownership right back to new in order to prove your title.

SSR simply identifies an individual boat to satisfy EU regulations, which keeps European officials such as the French Gendarmerie off your back.

I beg to differ : you need to prove ownership back to original OR for the last 5 years for Part 1 registration.

You also need the vessel measured by a registered surveyor at exorbitant cost. You can't just supply the measurements from the builder's brochure.

There was a splendid tale in the Sadler Owners Assoc mag some years back about a couple with an S26 they wanted to take to far places and therefore wanted Pt 1 reg. They kept applying only to be told that the name was already in use - this happened about 6 times and they were getting a bit fed up with the process.

In the meanwhile husband hit the gatepost with their car and hand wrote the insurance claim details for his wife to type up. Trying to decipher the handwriting she said "Does this say STOUT BLUE CATERPILLAR ?" and with one voice they said "bet noone's called a boat that !" And so they got their Part 1 registration. To my delight we saw the boat in Cowes - the name on the dodgers appeared only once but stretched from the spray hood on one side, round the stern to the other side !

I remember seeing a link to a site which allowed you to check boat names and their MMSI, so it was a radio authority site of some sort. Perhaps someone here can post the link as it allows you to quickly check any name.
