JUst continuing the research.

Cant stretch to a HF transiever as yet.

So looking into a receiver only that can receive weather data.

Plus I have a load of amazon vouchers, which helps.

Not used one but you should be able to.

These definitely work, I had wfax from carib - UK using one.

If it just has a pull out aerial it won't work well. Sony has an SSB receiver that has both a pulll out aerial for normal frequencies and a long wire aerial for SSB that you can hoist.

Degen de1103 is a stunning radio. I think the sensitivity surpassed anything I'd used sub 200 quid.

Receives wefax, marine hf band, broadcast band, and amateur band and does SSB.

SSB receiver

Yes it has an external ANT connector.
However you can buy the Sony SW7600 receivers for about 20 quid. especially if they say defect in the ebay description. I have 5 myself.
Easy to fix. Generally (9 times out of 10) the electrolite Caps dry out after 20 years and loose there capcitance. if you replace the 15 or so capacitors it will most probably work again.

I have had good results from a Sangean ATS909 with its long wire antenna. Also later badged as a Roberts radio.Cost was about €200.JVcomm32 as link via soundcard on laptop. For the money that Amazon linked radio seems worth a go if it has 1 hz tuning on SSB?
