can you identify the outboard bracket that goes with these holes

The locking lever on mine has an effective spring to keep the lock engaged.

So had mine, but it wasn't really strong enough. powerful spring would have solved the problem but made adjustment more difficult, which slanty slots would have avoided.

Unlikely - the brackets come with holes already drilled - and do you fancy drilling 8 holes through 6mm thick stainless?

There seem to be two basic designs about. The more common are made of extruded aluminium alloy, around 6mm thick as you say. See http://www.mailspeedmarine.com/outb...ium-adjustable-motor-bracket-15hp734989.bhtml for an example (note that it is predrilled for 12 bolt positions, so can easily be mounted with 8).

Others, generally a bit cheaper, are made of much thinner folded stainless. See http://www.force4.co.uk/541/Force-4-S-S-Outboard-Motor-Bracket---up-to-10HP.html

I've never seen one made out of 6mm stainless.

Was thinking of the quality US made ones I used to sell at Seagull (but of course that was 35 years ago!). You are right - the cheapy ones are folded sheet.

"Seagull" as in "Forty Featherweight"? I'd love to get my hands on one of the slot-in brackets they did - would be just right for my wee Hunter.

Yes, they were super bits of kit and sold well. Got into the more sophisticated swing down variety when the newer engines with reverse came in and targeting the yacht auxiliary market.

Good to meet you Dylan! The bracket will be much better used on the back of the Centaur banging round Scotland than it will be sat in my shed.

Any even better, that's SWMBO's Valentine's Day present sorted too...

they certainly respnded right quick to my email

and knew about my project

so....

D

That's 'cos I lurks here....and also receive all the incoming sales emails at GF....I saw the name and thought "Well, well, well" ;)

Glad to hear you got it sorted Dylan, and from my home town as well! Feel free to hit me up if you need anything looked at/for/enquired about.

Regards

Nik

Well it was all going very well until we watched Dylan telling some Fireball sailors in Brightlingsea that they had an ugly boat. As SWMBO's first sailing experiences were being launched around the forestay of our Fireball (we've had 3, all sold now), she got all nostalgic and defensive and it kinda killed the moment...

So I'll have to try again with my "Celestial Navigation for Beginners" DVD. She did once say something about watching stars together being so romantic...

Can it be soaked in a bit of old diesel for a day or 7? If no plastic shims etc, a bit of gentle heat?

Hmmm, annoying that's it's solid. I think I'd be pretty tempted to drill out the bolt and replace with a new s/s one. I guess you can't go too mad with pry bars in case you snap the ally! Got your mail...good luck with it...I'm sure it will move again!

Bloody Ting

Sounds as if you may have one like mine, with mild steel bolts. Nothing I tried would shift mine, I'm afraid.

I have had it pretty well soaked in penetrating oil overnight

Now I know it fits I shall persevere and feed it will penetrating oil for the next two days

if that fails then I will get Marky Mark the garage man who has kept all my crappy cars and boat trailers in fighting condition for almost three decades.

I have tried air gun heat - but I am worried about snapping the aluminium

D

Hmmm, bugger. I'm not sure air gun heat is enough...I'd be tempted by a proper flame jobbie. I doubt you'll melt the ally unless you go really mad. I think we need the expert advice of Vyv Cox here!

Can you not just cut the bolt heads off with a grinder, get it in a pillar drill and drill the buggers out? Am I right in understanding that two are moving, two are seized?
