Sybarite is only a year out, maybe just a typo. According to my records I last got €1.40/£1 on 1st November 2007. The pound crashed to roughly its present level by April 2008 which it held for a while, but then again in November and December 2008 to hit the rock bottom figure you quote.

Many yachties saw the second crash coming and prudently laid in euros, when Alistair Darling (then Chancellor) denied rumours that "quantitative easing" was being considered.

Suggest you go back through the actual facts and history and you'll find the ups and downs considerably more and the dates you quote apocryphal.

However I would love to know where I can still buy wine for £4 a bottle in the UK!!

Don't you have a Lidl in Lymington? or shop at either Tescos or Sainsburys as this week as there is plenty of choice of quite decent wine at £4 or even less.

The latest craze is "promiscuous shopping" - polite term for keeping an eye open for bargains and flitting from one store to another to minimize your spend. So, yesterday I bought 6 bottles in Tescos for £5 each less 25% = £3.75 a bottle. Part of a £40 shop so I get £5 off my next £40 shop when I can buy 11 bottles for £55 less 25% less £5 = £3.30 a bottle. Up to 2 weeks ago Lidl had £1 a bottle off 4 bottles French wine with several choices at between £5-6 - less the £1 a bottle. Last week Sainsburys was 25% off 6 bottles.

If you don't want to be seen as a cheapskate then Rude Wines have an introductory offer in the Telegraph for 12 bottles plus a bottle of fizz for £50 including delivery - £3.84 a bottle (and very good they are too).

Almost like the good old days taking a day trip to Cherbourg on the Barfleur!

A fascinating thread because SWMBO and I were discussing this very subject two days ago - I still want to go for it, but she is still not keen.

Aldi - quite good wine as well and sometimes under the £4 mark

PS Tranona is of course quite right - if you go to big shysters like Tesco and work their "offers" you can get quite good bargains, mainly in fuel discounts. But, you do need time on your hands and the ability to work out the true price. On the whole supermarket wines, if cheap, are really poor and their prices reflect the habit of adding it on to take it off.

PSS Spoken from my position of an Associate Chevalier de Tastevin de Bourgogne, into which I was conned by Jean Jacques Litaud. However, not everyones' taste in wine is the same - I knew someone who swore by New World Chardonnays. But then he smoked as well and had no palate at all.
Laithwaites have an offer on for relapsed customers making quite good shopping but @ more like £6.50/bottle after all the glamour is stripped off - main benefit from them is you'll frequently get intros to little known wines, you'll never find in supermarkets and seldom in off-licences (are any left?). Tony has some quite good tasters!!

.... Do we treat the rest of your comments with the same scepticism, this error invites? It's more like 12 years ago when we were getting €1.40/£1 ...

No Charles, I suggest YOU go back to the actual facts and history. It was not 12 years ago that we were last getting €1.40/£1. Do we treat the rest of your comments with the same scepticism, this error invites?

I sometimes wonder just how much supermarkets here are paying the producers, bearing in mind every bottle has £2.05 duty + VAT in the price and has to be shipped from origin often in huge bladders, bottled here and then packed and transported to the retailer. They must be paying the vinyard pence per bottle. Our 2 - 4 euro bottle in country of origin is quite a reasonable wine. For those with taste buds not up to much, they can buy at 1 euro/litre in cardboard cartons.

It's a classic loss leader strategy. Top supermarkets, particularly Tesco are fighting for market share and this is one way of getting footfall. Sub £5 basic wine is a very small part of their offering and the margins on the £6-10 wines where their bulk sales are can stand the promotional deductions better - and are often over priced at their regular prices so only good value at promotionaal prices.

Hee hee,

We do it on a grand a month and have a back up for a major breakage on the boat, but we do drink the local greek wine at £1.60p for 1.5ltrs...
Not too bad either,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Hickup,,,

A couple of question if you please , do you live on board full time ?
In your £1K month do that included flights back home car or transport rented when you do return back to see family and accommodation ,
Is fuel , boats services and repairs and winter marina fees included .
One last question , how many mile do you do in a season ,
I just trying to work out why there is such a big different in what you spend to what we spend .
,
I have to say you do well on your budget , good on you

Hi,

We did all summer this year and we actually lived on £100 PER week, the other £150 covers one flight each person,
fuel and marina fee for 6 months,,,
We live on the exact amount back here in uk,,
Im back here now so as to sell couple of cars and boats that I have, then more time aboard next year,
When we not on the boat we travel over land trips,,,
Its a tight budget but have been doing it for a few years now,

Thing is there are many different amounts that people are spending while living on their boats,
NornaBiron for instance lives on the same as us,,,think a little less actually,
we still eat ashore once a week or so,
We are well set up for anchoring and lift keel so get into the shallows and don't need to run for a marina etc,
sail only if we can, and in no rush, we did 1500 miles this summer,

Perhaps we can look over a more extended time period and the actual mid-market rate rather than a specialist money changers' offer.

This mid-market rate over the last 10 years shows the actual highs and lows - the last time the exchange was €1.45/£1 was, in fact, 7 years ago not 14 as I quoted and the high was €1.52. As it so happens 14 years ago it was €1.40/£1.
I'll give you that, if it'll make you feel better ;-)

still not sure how you do it , although you only given a six months figure . Tho you did say you spend the same for food back home ..
I would have a big problem paying for eating out once a weeks for six months , fuel , winter marina , haul out and In antifouling , insurances , servicing and any running repairs , flights , transport to and from airport , and touring over land on £3600 , hats off to you again well done .

Our season is from 8 to 10 months , we never use marinas once we left our winter stop over , we anchor all the time , this year mooring fees was 30 euros , we eat out once a week and our mileages is around 2500 to 3000 a year this year 2800 . we go home twice over the winter months to see family them two trips alone will set us back £ 2000 , in flights , transport to from airport , car hire , accommodation , petrol , that's with out little gift for grandchildren .
All this as to be accounted for when the question is asked , can I do it on £1 K a month , I agree with you some say they can do it for less , but are they taken everything Into account , right down to that ice cream you had this after noon :)

This "Europe" description amuses me, just where in Europe do you mean? We're finding UK food prices crazy compared to Portugal, far more expensive but, last time we were in France that was even dearer than UK.

Living on £1k per month in Portugal is easy, provided Algarve marinas are avoided in high season - or preferably avoided most of the year.

We not been in Portugal for five years now so I can't comment , but we sailed south of France , Sardinia , Corsica and Sicily last year , this year Malta , Italy , Sicily , Croatia , Tunisia and Greece and only in Tunisia did we see any real different in the cost of food . some stuff more in places then other and some cheaper , but on the whole there wasn't much different in our weekly bill ,
Hope that clarify what I mean when I say Europe .
