Sorry, bit confused.

Can you test DSC? Do you arrange to push the red button or something?

just call someone on dsc - enter their number, just like dialing them on a phone.

can't test the red button, but if dsc calling and receiving is working, then you know dsc is operating - and so red button should be too as it uses exactly the same system

Slight correction adjustment in order!

You can't test Class D DSC radio without making a live call, however, Tomsk is correct that if DSC Routine calling works so does DSC DISTRESS alerting.

Class A DSC of course can be self-tested but you're unlikely to find that kit on a Pleasure Boat.

Class A, Class D........

I can just see me pressing that button and nothing happening!

Oh, thats another thing, I need to book the course to update my licence.

I think is just adding a touch of confusion himself )))
You only have to worry about Class D.
This is the class required by leisure boats in the UK.

Class A is for Solas vessels.

If you press the button and its all installed correctly things will happen and very fast.
Even before you have finshed giving your voice "Mayday Mayday Mayday" message.

Hmm let me think

Press the red button automatically alerting MAYDAY, supplying ship's detail and (if GPS plumbed in) ship's position

or

MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY

THIS IS Ship's name, callsign OR MMSI 3 times)

MAYDAY followed by ship's name, callsign or MMSI

POSITION............................................................................................

NATURE OF DISTRESS......................................................................

AID REQUIRED........................................................................

NUMBER OF PERSONS ON BOARD and ANY USEFUL INFORMATION......................................................................

OVER

Nope I would say that DSC is easier if in trouble. The bit about types was just to clarify the differences in equipment cos the self-test issue was dealt with in the last two issues of the Airwaves newsletter.
