Nigeria naturally, Brass, Fucardos, Warri, Port Harcourt,,,,,,
but how about one (at least in the Gulf? Halul island takes a bit of beating, or Das Island,though the food was better there the fumes from the flare stacks ruined my taste buds.

No agruments about Bonny River but Das Island? wash your mouth out Sir - finest rock/sand Golf course in the area with the best added Crude perfume to better your swing.

Nowhere in the gulf quite gets the cake here, Nigeria has them all beaten into a cocked hat. I've been to most places in the gulf and west africa. But for a real shithole, try polar lights rigsite, in northern siberia, now we are really talking! or songo songo island offshore Tanzania. Or pakistan, in the foothills, or Libya in the desert, or sarawak, in the jungle, or even gabon in the jungle! really nice spots!

I must disagree about Cambletown. I was there a couple of months ago; friendly, helpful fee collection, only a tenner a night for a sheltered pontoon, fees waived one night in three.

OK, the facilities are limited, but good value for what was available. I'd certainly go back.

Tiksi is pretty bleak, speaking of Siberia... an ex-girlfriend once got talked into going trekking there. After a hell of a journey by train, they arrived in Tiksi and were promptly arrested - ex-gf is perfectly bilingual in English and Russian, her friend was the wife of a British Army Captain, and Tiksi is home to a good deal of Russia's long-range strike bomber fleet.

I must say, Pakistan (Islamabad) was much nicer than I expected, although Kabul is far nicer as far as climate is concerned - the two are totally different, and only seperated by a few hundred miles.

Yes, I never minded Campbeltown. Pubs quite boisterous but good, a very nice Chinese restaurant when I was last there and no problems at all with collection of fees, either a friendly and helpful harbourmaster or an honesty box.

Only problem is that the place tends to be a bit of a trap, coming from the south it's too easy to divert in there instead of continuing round the Mull. Once there it's not too difficult to think the weather too bad to go round the Mull, and then it's the Crinan, usually as a hundred or so other boats are either going to or returning from a race week. Hence I always preferred to go north up the Irish side and head for Gigha or Islay.

Got it! Londonderry , alongside the quay near the sailors rest. My Dear! The CS gas, the explosions, the people! Oh sure that was the late '60's,,,, no doubt there is a marina now?

Been there, done that,,,,,,,,,,,, Ebrington Barracks, ex-Sea Eagle, Derry City, Straban, Sion Mills, Bogside, Mex Garage, Motorman, Bloody Sunday all like that. Two years of it. Nothing to do with sailing though,,,,,,,,,,

i was in Strabane aswell as derry, enniskillen, omagh, belfast, etc. etc. 3 years! Bloody hell it seems so long ago now, but still very bad memories. Enough said I think.

NOPE .......

Last trip to that berth - there was a dead body .... tethered to the bank ..... While we were discharging the 'wagin' came to collect him.
A place that you can never forget !!

We used to start discharge and it took hours before the cargo actually started to move ..... we reckoned that the line ran under the river and the previous product had to be melted by ours before it would move !!

The last Bitumen carrier I was on was the PARTULA ....... I was there when the Captain of Lindingher Ivory was killed by the pirates ........... + all the cement boats etc.

It all comes back ..... East Mole Traffic - any news for today ??? NO berthing today ?? What a shame !

Iran - Iraq war ...... shuttle duty ..... Sirri Island to Kharg !!! then after a few near misses ..... moved to Lavan Island ..... Iraqi's got to there so clever b-ds moved us back to Sirri !!!!

Iranian Silkworm missiles supposed to look after us were more of a bloody menace !!!!!

Vastness of Russia ...

When I lived in St. Petersburg ...... had a client call about us making inspection of container cargo. No prob. I go to my inspectors ...... who wants a container inspection job .... All stand up. One I thought was best for job - I pick. Igor - you're on !

Call client and get more eetails and offer price ...... he says 'Does that include travel and how quick can I have report ....' - Me thinks hang-on a mo ! "where are these containers ??"

Client says - well I'm just looking on map and its only a little way inside Russia ......

Now c'mon - give me a Town name ..... ????

Novissibirsk ............ Yeh got yer !!!!

Took guy 3 days to get there, then one day for container to be emptied .... all 20 ton of broken toilet bowls and bidets !!! for the new hotel to be opened a few days later !!! and 3 days to get back !!!!

He went first plane, then train, then bus, then by car ..... BOTH ways !!!!
