can this chartplotter display be repeated?

An old old handheld magellan nav 6000 chartplotter has NMEA output.

The manual states it can 'speak' to a tiller pilot and be linked to a laptop etc.

But can I use the NMEA output to link it to a laptop for the laptop's monitor to simply act as a repeater display, does anyone know / remember?

It can be linked to a laptop according to the manual, but I don't know if that is just to upload waypoints etc.

I don't have a lead or else I'd have tried, but if anyone says yes it can be repeated on laptop monitor I'll make the tiny little lead.

The manual only states that it outputs NMEA 0183 (and lists the sentences output) and the max baud rate is 19200 so I would bet a sizeable proportion of my modest net worth that the answer is "no". If by upload you mean PC->plotter, there's not actually any mention of the nav 6000 taking any input

It won't repeat the exact display of charts (as shown on the screen itself) but the NMEA sentences output are sufficient for connection to either laptop or other manufacturer display for lat/long/xte/waypoint information.

If you have the power/data cable for it you should be able to set the output speed to 4800 (default) and connect it to the serial port of a laptop (using Serial to ISB cable if necessary). With something like NavMonPC (free software) you could display all the position, speed, waypoint information or even use it as position input on some other plotter application on the laptop.

I would also say you could use it as input to something like the NASA GPS repeater if all you need at a fixed unit on deck is position info and xte/distance etc to the next waypoint.

Excellent. Thanks very much for that. Haven't got a lead, but it will be easy to knock one up. Better than throwing away a working piece of kit. I don't like the throw away society.
My granddad told me how he used to fix the windings on an alternator _guess that would be generator in his day. Nowadays we just buy a new alternator.

And in 1970 they said we'd have more time in 2000 onwards. Seems they had more time (or did better quality work?) in the "olden days"?

If you use it in Uk /Northern France, then buy Belfield Chart Plotter software (£70 including all 800 UK charts) for the laptop and either use a usb to serial adaptor or a NMEA to PC adaptor to supply the Chart Plotter with the gps data. (It can also display other nmea data such as wind, etc)

This also has the advantage that the laptop is a backup in case the Magellan fails (if you buy the usb GPS dongle with the software from Belfield)

Yes, but that link to the software looked really cool.

I have view my harbour usb stick and 800 charts for laptop IF I get a cruiser again.

I was just tinkering with some old kit.

Will probably be selling a lot of it soon.
