With their mooring lines?

I am down here in Shotley, and my neighbor is parked facing his big scoop of a Sprayhood directly downwind... And has two scraps of 8mm sheets as mooring lines off the stern to the pontoon from his ample stern.

This makes me very nervous, as they are already taut and working hard...

If either of those fails... Then that boat will be straight onto me...

I really do despair at folks who think that raggedy ex sheets are adequate for mooring... Even in a marina like shotley.

Please folks, Can we make a effort with mooring lines this weekend?

Anyways.. I have broken my rule of never messing with a guys mooring lines, and added a spare bit of line from my locker to double up his stern lines...

Am I being ott?

It never ceases to amaze me that chaps who happily spend 100K or more on a yacht, then tie it up with binder twine.

The marina guys at Shotley do check lines, fenders and covers in bad weather, and adjust as required.

I have already seen them out today adding lines to a couple, odviously at the request of the berth holder... I can't see how my neighbors could be adjusted per SE... They, and several around me, are simply inadequate....

But I am a bit into big lines in the winter, having come from Plymouth yacht haven we're it really gets up, and combines with a swell as well...

You are not abrogating safety; you are still there to check aren't you? If you are not happy with whatever they do because it jeopardises your boat then tell them!

In fact, put it in writing, e-mail them expressing your concerns.

Otherwise, man could return '"OOoooh look, my boat is damaged! Hey look at this, someone has been fiddling with my mooring warps............."

Went down to Nutmeg yesterday and changed my mooring lines to 15mm. Added several extras and she now looks like Shelob (big spider, Lord of the Rings) in her lair. Self consciously I spoke to yard manager and asked if I had gone OTT and he replied that it makes a pleasant change to have a responsible owner! Now feel smug!

Fingers crossed.

Well mine is on a swing mooring on the blackwater and still out there. Went out today and doubled up my mooring strop and lashed down the rest. She's in for a bumpy night.

Well all did you survive the thrashing of this morning? You all took measures and I am sure you slept well last night having done so.

For my part I was away until late Sunday night and therefore had no opportunity to do so, and therefore had to rely on my 2 stout 25mm mooring lines, one each to winch and deck cleat and hope that the swinging mooring tackle would do its job. Still woke at 04.00, 05.30 and 06.00 and listened to the wind and estimated when the boat was to be afloat and what may be happening. Viewed boat from shore at 06.45 and thankfully all was well, but I witnessed a nearby drop keel 21 ft get knocked over (and it stayed there) as a 70 knot blast made the water appear to boil.

There must have been some serious load placed on the mooring tackle though, anyone know how to work out what it might be? Being neaps and not much water in the river the riser was not far off horizontal!

Interesting this. The owner next to me in a marina berth put new ropes on because of the forecast and buggered off to Spain to play golf! Spent a lot of last night taking in the slack of his ropes as they stretched as his boat was being blown harder and harder onto ours. Glad I did though when it really hit us at 08.00 this morning! Only ten minutes but Jeez!
