Can I use a outboard tank as my main fuel tank?

Hi, my current fuel tank is ridiculously small, my question is can I use a rigid plastic outboard tank instead? Or does anyone have any cheap suggestions?

My existing tank has two rubber pipes connected to the fuel tank, one is the engine fuel supply but what is the other? Yanmar 1GM10.

I can't see how outboard tanks are vented...

I'm confused.

Thanks

Mike

Outboard tanks are usually vented by a screw down vent on the filler cap. Although it has to be said that some (In the past only maybe) have an automatic vent system that operates when a removable fuel line is connected.

The second line from your Yanmar is probably a spill back from the injectors.
Normal arrangement but not universal

Mike,

Yes you can use your outboard tank as a diesel tank. You will have to fit a small return hose to take the excess fuel from the main engine and ensure that the tank is well vented.
We use an old yamaha tank for Diesel on my last boat, worked very well.
You might look at www.tek-tanks.com for a low cost alternative to having a new steel tank built. If you have a look at the Gougon Brothers "West System" boat building book you will find much usefull info' on building diesel tanks from epoxy and ply.

I dont think Tek tanks are a low cost alternative. The've always looked pretty expensive to me.
